Recently the Director of the Beaufort County Economic Development Commission (EDC) presented an "annual report" to the County Commissioners.

Is it a conflict of interest for a local government official to vote on a matter before a board upon which he/she sits if one of the parties with an interest in the issue before the board is a close associate, such as a client, employee or close business associate of the official?

Washington needs a new police station. The current one is woefully inadequate. Everyone agrees with that.

The Washington City Council adopted the FY 2012 budget on a split 3-2 vote Monday night (6-13-11).

This year's budget process was pretty much the same as the previous year's...and the year before. The only real difference is that they have much less in their reserve account so they simply plan to raise taxes.

The issue before the Beaufort County School Board in a special called workshop meeting Monday (6-6-11) was whether to reduce its budget request for next year in order to try to help the County avoid a 10% tax increase.

The Beaufort County Board of Commissioners ended their scheduled budget workshops with a bang rather than a whimper Monday night.

But by way of commentary, if we read the list correctly the Legislature would cut the Learn and Earn program that allows student to enroll in community college courses and get high school credits, including the Early College programs.

The Beaufort County School Board hopefully has finally gotten the message that there is a recession going on. In a rare move of frugality they voted Tuesday (5-17-11) night not to go all out in spending on a project to replace some football bleachers at Washington High School.
