"Every Picture Tells a Story ... Don't It:" Washington's Festivals Aplenty | Eastern NC Now

Washington, North Carolina may be a small city here in eastern North Carolina, but it has developed into the festival capital of the region.

The Pamlico River along the Washington's Harbor District is abuzz with folks motoring slowly into place to dock, and then to find the fun that is the Washington Summer Festival: Above and below.     photos by Stan Deatherage

As the sinking sun yields the golden light of the dying day, the Washington Summer Festival shifts into its next gear, with hordes of new people descending upon the waterfront community's business district. When the light fades, I head to my car, which I habitually park behind the county administration building. The once empty parking lot is now full, and home is just a few miles away. I'm hungry and my wife misses me ... I hope.

Of course, you knew I wouldn't let the unique beauty of an interesting sunset go to waste, or unrecorded: Above and below.     photos by Stan Deatherage

Washington's Music in the Streets was held on that third Friday, as promised, just a few days after the weekend that was the annual Summer Festival. Downtown Washington's West Main and Market Streets are the platforms for small bands to make big music.

Above a young man tunes his guitar as the street scene becomes a wandering, wafting bevy of tunes upon the warm air of the late Spring evening. Along the borders of north Market Street, vintage cars, line the parking lanes, where folks walk and minstrels play: Below.     photos by David Winstead.

The young juxtaposed against the old - both producing music that we of all ages all enjoy.     photos by David Winstead

Whether clowns creep you out, or not, is not the issue. The issue is: Madame Potts is a very nice person, and strikes an excellent image as she makes a joyful sound - especially for this publication.     photo by David Winstead

I think I may just have a phobia to deal with.

It all began with Ringling, Ringling, a ringing in my ear. How frightening, and yet so very weird.

WHAT? Clown? Clown never crossed my mind, however, Ms.Potts is unique in her splendidly coloful attire. Perfect for accordian song: hence the black and white keys and the stripes of the outfit. She is truely an inspiration to those of us who are afraid to step away from our boring black, brown, and tan wardrobe!!!! Love you Madame!
