"Every Picture Tells a Story ... Don't it:" Washington, NC on a Spring Sunday Afternoon | Eastern North Carolina Now

To the north of the boardwalk along Washington's nature walk is Moss Landing, where Moss Planing Mill once stood erect and noisily sawed and planed wood. As a child, I lived a block away, and I vividly remember the noise of the huge saws and planers, the whistle to begin and end the day, and the constant smell of the sawdust.
Looking east at their accompanying boat docks and the railway trestle fording this narrow part of the Pamlico River: Above. A closer view of the docked boats, and the railway trestle, out in front of Moss Landing: Below.     Photos by Stan Deatherage    Click image to enlarge.

And then looking southwest into the last rays of the retreating sun: Above. The aforementioned containment pond is populated by a host of wet-natured plants, like these cattails silhouetted along its edge, with the reflection of the golden sky in its quiet waters: Below.     Photos by Stan Deatherage    Click image to enlarge.

Fishermen find their way home as the day loses its light: Above. Another beautiful sunset along the Pamlico River as I head further west along the waterfront walk: Below.     Photos by Stan Deatherage    Click image to enlarge.

My wife, silhouetted in this shot, sees what my camera saw: Above. And the last shot at the bottom of this story: Below.     Photos by Stan Deatherage    Click image to enlarge.
