Raleigh, N.C.    With just days remaining until the USDA's February 10 deadline, the backlog of FNS cases (food stamps) has dropped by 92.5 percent since January 23. Even with this significant progress, state and county workers are poised to work through another weekend as they seek to eliminate all applications and recertifications pending over 90 days and expedited applications older than 7 days.

"Counties made tremendous gains last weekend when their staff could focus exclusively on processing applications and recertifications," said Wayne Black, director of DHHS Division of Social Services. "We expect to make similar progress this weekend as we focus on eliminating the backlog of all pending applications."

As of Friday morning, only 13 counties remained with 10 or more applications pending for the February 10 milestone. The bulk of the pending cases are in Wake, Forsyth, Cumberland, Pitt and Mecklenburg counties.

"I am extremely proud of the work performed by our state and county workers to meet the federal deadlines," said DHHS Secretary Aldona Wos. "Our top priority continues to be getting these important benefits to eligible North Carolina families in a timely manner."
