Republican County Commissioners Brinn, Deatherage, and Richardson have repeatedly attempted to protect the democratic rights of the citizens of Beaufort County by moving to require a referendum vote of the people.

    News Release:

    WASHINGTON     The Beaufort County Republican Party meeting in convention at the Beaufort County Courthouse last evening, elected county Republican delegates to the upcoming state Republican Convention and the First and Third Congressional District conventions, and also overwhelmingly adopted a resolution praising three of the Republican county commissioners.

    The resolution commended GOP Commissioners Stan Deatherage, Gary Brinn, and Hood Richardson ''for fighting for the democratic rights of the people of Beaufort County in trying to obtain a voter referendum on whether to build a new county jail''. It noted that ''these efforts were thwarted by a mostly Democrat group led by Democrat Commission chairman Langley''.

    The convention was composed of delegates and alternates elected at precinct meetings last month.

    WHEREAS, the North Carolina Constitution requires a referendum vote by the voters to approve any major county borrowing that is backed by the county's taxing authority;

    AND WHEREAS, a Democrat-led plan to build a new county jail is attempting to circumvent that Constitutional requirement;

    AND WHEREAS, the principles of democracy dictate that citizens should be able to make the ultimate decision on whether major borrowing should be undertaken for major county projects,

    AND WHEREAS, Republican County Commissioners Brinn, Deatherage, and Richardson have repeatedly attempted to protect the democratic rights of the citizens of Beaufort County by moving to require a referendum vote of the people on whether to build a new county jail or not, only to be thwarted by a mostly Democrat group led by Democrat Commission chairman Langley,

    BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Beaufort County Republican Party commends Commissioners Brinn, Deatherage, and Richardson for fighting for the democratic rights of the people of Beaufort County in trying to obtain a voter referendum on whether to build a new county jail.
