Press Release:

Raleigh, N.C.     Governor Pat McCrory is calling for a scholarship program that will give newly separated veterans the equivalency of in-state tuition at the state's University of North Carolina institutions. In April, the governor said he will ask the Legislature for in-state tuition at the state's 58 community colleges.

"Veterans are a valuable addition to any workforce, and we want them to set down roots right here in North Carolina," said Governor McCrory. "They bring leadership, training and discipline to the job, and those qualities are a huge recruiting tool in terms of economic development. North Carolina prides itself on being one of the most veteran-friendly states in the country – this latest initiative continues to solidify that reputation."

Under the governor's plan, veterans within two years of separation from their respective military service would receive a minimum $7,500 scholarship. To qualify, a veteran would have served a minimum of four years, served part of that time at a North Carolina military facility and earned an honorable discharge.

Scholarship recipients must reside in North Carolina at the time of enrollment; however, have yet to qualify for in-state residency. The scholarship is limited to two semesters since recipients are expected to establish residency after completing one year of coursework.

Funds will be used to make scholarship awards for the 2015-16 academic year and come from the North Carolina Education Lottery. The cost of the scholarships is expected to be $5 million.
