Democrats Remain in Control of the Beaufort County Board of Commissioners | Eastern North Carolina Now

Many are finally questioning: After so many Republican (in name only) majorities, will there ever be a Republican chairman with a real Republican majority on the Beaufort County Board of Commissioners?

Tonight, December 1, 2014 at about 5:10 pm, in Beaufort County, two Republican commissioners left the board of county commissioners, and two Republican county commissioners took their place, bringing the total to: 4 Republicans, 3 Democrats. As in the recent past, the Democrats took control of the board, and may well remain in control of the political agenda for the succeeding year. This situation, where the Republican majority on the board did not elect the chairman, is a well worn tale of woeful missed identification of loyalty to certain ideals shared as a group, and in this case that group are the elected Beaufort County Republicans.

There has existed a Republican majority (in name only) on this board of county commissioners since 2002, yet there has never been a consensus among the Republican commissioners to elect a chairman, except in 2002, when Republican convert Earle Tetterton was elected Chairman (but that is another story to be told well, later in another post). Since 2004, the chairmanship has been in a state of flux, which originated the infamous 5-2 (remember the red stickers with white numbering 5-2).

Tonight, after one decade of time and the space to know better, the Republican majority allowed the Democrats to take control of the board once again, by a vote of 4 to 3, as Gary Brinn was elected chairman, with Jerry Langley elected as vice chairman. During the voting process for chairman: New commissioner Ron Buzzeo - R, nominated new commissioner Frankie Waters - R for chairman, then new/old commissioner Ed Booth nominated Gary Brinn - R for chairman, thereby splitting the Republican vote for chairman, and vice chairman. The vote for chairman: 4 votes for Gary Brinn (Robert Belcher -D, Jerry Langley -D, Ed Booth -D, Gary Brinn -R); 3 votes for Frankie Waters (Ron Buzzeo -R, Hood Richardson -R, Frankie Waters - R). The Republicans lose once again, which has been fairly much the case for the last decade.

If one might consider: 'Hey, (recently former) Commissioner Deatherage, Gary Brinn is a registered Republican!"

To answer, and then speak succinctly to the matter, one's registration has proved to make little difference in who is elected chairman of the commissioners in the county of Beaufort. Not to belabor the point, which I do intend to re-visit at a later date; deals are always struck, outside of the public's purview, between all parties, whenever a Democrat is made chairman without a Democrat majority in place, or whenever a Republican is made Chairman, without the support of the Republicans. An explanation, to a much finer point, will be forthcoming.

Should the community be alarmed when Republicans, who attack other far more conservative Republicans, are used by Democrats on the Beaufort County Commission?
14.38%   Yes, I expect a reversal in the nature of a politician when it comes to party loyalty.
80%   No, I've seen this movie before: Local Republicans placing their ambitions above truth, loyalty.
5.63%   I really don't pay attention because local politics bore me.

What on 'God's green earth' has 'progressive' got to do with it.

Being a commissioner is most three things: 1) Having the wisdom to set prudent policy, 2) Oversight over every department, 3) Possessing the ability to do math, and do it well.

The last I checked, self-proclaimed progressives can not do math, none that I have ever met or know of.

What I am trying to say is that agreeing to disagree can have smiles attached. A 4-3 vote on all matters is hardly any kind of compromise and progressive status, in my view.

With the greatest of respect, Gene, don't confuse a business meeting with 'faces filled with hate'.

With this current board of commissioners, who I served with for many years, I don't hate any of my fellow commissioners, and I'll take a leap here, I don't think any of them hate me either.

We just have distinctly opposing ideals.

I am concerned with the look of hate on many Commissioners' faces. I have personally attended 2 meetings. I have viewed the video recording made at each meeting and broadcast on the government channel of local cable.

Somebody needs to smile and cajole among the group. Maybe they should pick a good bar and enjoy some libations that generate good discussion and convivial personal relationships. Until then, we are going through another hired set of professional who can see no change in Beaufort County --- the county of hate over politics AND friendly citizens willing to do anything to help one another.

I prefer an example set of friendship and progressive action.

It is one thing to change your mind based upon new information. It is another thing to just tell dozens of people one thing and then do something else within 2 weeks. Gary Brinn cut a deal to become the "Chairman" of the Board of Commissioners with the same people that have done serious damage to this county for years.

Beaufort County continues to be a Tier 1 county. When will it become obvious to everyone why this continues?

One only has to look at the analysis of the Beaufort Observer editorial team to know that as long as people fall for the lies that the democrats are representing the poor, you will remain poor.

Gary Brinn says he represents "all the people" He represents no one but himself and he will be rewarded for that in 2016, if he does not resign in the next two months.

Not yet ... no self-fulfilling prophesy here.

WELL ~~~ tell us Stan. Wait with baited breath, man.

Well, Democrats have functionally always been in control of the Beaufort County Board of County Commissioners. That is just an unmitigated fact.

About the chairmanship debacle, I warned Hood of this possible scenario. There is a second stage of this scenario, where it can become progressively worse for the citizens of Beaufort County. I pray that it will not turn towards that darker path.

Beaufort County voters once again elected a Republican majority to the County Commission and once again a Republican has given it back to the Democrats in a backroom deal. I've about given up on ever seeing a real Republican majority in my lifetime.
