Raleigh, N.C.     Governor Pat McCrory congratulated this year's North Carolina Christmas Tree Association contest winners at a presentation at the State Capitol today. Each year, the association holds a contest to choose growers whose Christmas trees and wreaths will adorn the Capitol rotunda, governor's office hallway and windows.

"There's no better way to celebrate the holiday season and North Carolina agriculture than by displaying our state's most beautiful trees throughout the State Capitol," Governor McCrory said. "The Christmas tree industry is an important component of our proud agricultural heritage and continues to promote economic growth in western North Carolina and the surrounding area."

Charles and Peggy Sturgill, owners of Sturgills Wholesale Christmas Tree Farm in Ashe County, were this year's tree contest winners. Two of their trees will be displayed in the governor's hallway and the capitol rotunda. The wreath contest winners, Joe Freeman and Linda Jones of Mistletoe Meadows in Ashe County, will have 23 wreaths on display.

As the N.C. Christmas Tree Association Tree & Wreath contest 2014 Grand Champion winner, Charles Sturgill will now go on to compete in the National Christmas Tree Association Tree & Wreath Contest in 2015. If he wins that, he will provide the official White House Christmas Tree.

There are more than 1,000 Christmas tree growers producing an estimated 37 million trees in North Carolina, and approximately five million trees are harvested annually. The state has ranked second in the nation in number of trees harvested. The top five Christmas tree-producing counties in the state are Ashe, Avery, Alleghany, Watauga and Jackson. Christmas tree sales total in excess of $75 million with an additional estimated $25 million in wreaths, roping, swags, table decorations and mailbox decorations, according to the N.C. Christmas Tree Association.
