Accomplishments:

  • High School graduation rates are at an all-time high.
    • North Carolina's 2014 graduation rate of 83.9 percent is the highest recorded in the state's history.
  • Increased average teacher pay by nearly 7 percent, including longevity.
  • Provided veterans with in-state tuition at NC Community Colleges and UNC System universities.
  • We have continued to fund the Next Generation Power Electronics Innovation Institute at NC State.
  • The first bill the governor signed was education pathways legislation that expands and rewards students who make the choice to follow vocation and technical education programs.
  • We funded game changing research efforts in six high-demand priority areas for the universities.
  • Governor McCrory reconvened the "Education Cabinet," a group that includes Governor Pat McCrory, Superintendent of Public Instruction June Atkinson, State Board of Education Chairman Bill Cobey, President of the University of North Carolina System Tom Ross, President of the North Carolina Community College System Scott Ralls, President of the Association of Independent Colleges and Universities Hope Williams, and Secretary of Health and Human Services Aldona Wos, for the first time in nearly three years in early 2013.

Going Forward:

  • Raise teacher base pay to $35,000.
  • Eliminate unneeded testing by the next year so teachers can teach and students can learn.
  • Bring Wi-Fi to our classrooms and increase digital learning opportunities for both children and adults.
  • Expedite teacher certification by recognizing an individual's experience and subject expertise.
  • Increase the commercialization of university research.
