Press Release:

Raleigh, NC — The North Carolina Innovation Center (iCenter), which was created by Governor Pat McCrory and Chief Information Officer Chris Estes in 2013, has been recognized as a 2015 "Bright Idea" by the Ash Center at Harvard University. The Bright Ideas program recognizes creative initiatives that are at the forefront of government innovation.

"It's an honor to see our Innovation Center recognized on the national stage," said Governor McCrory. "By testing technology before we invest in it, we're making the most of our resources and finding new ways to become more efficient, effective and customer-friendly."

The iCenter is a "try before you buy" working lab where state employees, students and industry collaborate to test technology systems before the State commits to purchasing them. More than $6M worth of technology has been evaluated through the Innovation Center at no cost to the State, with an emphasis on digital and mobile solutions.

"Agencies are making better-informed decisions because of the work that's being done at the Innovation Center," said State CIO Chris Estes. "We're getting more value from our investments because agencies know the technology they're purchasing will meet their needs."

The Innovation Center has become a model for states across the country. Since 2014, North Carolina has led a National Innovation Community of 44 states who are learning from the iCenter's experience and sharing ideas about how to bring innovation to government.
