Governor McCrory Announces Appointments | Eastern North Carolina Now

    Raleigh, N.C. — The Office of Governor Pat McCrory announced the following appointments today:

North Carolina Judicial Standards Commission

  • Cresswell Elmore (Craven County) — Elmore is a retired aviation engineer and works part time as a consultant.

    The Commission has the authority to receive, investigate, conduct formal hearings and make recommendations of censure or removal concerning complaints whose allegations present evidence of misconduct or physical or mental incapacity of a judge. The term length is six years.

North Carolina Governor's Substance Abuse and Underage Drinking Prevention and Treatment Task Force

  • Leah Burns (Wake County) — Burns is a legislative assistant in the Office of Governor Pat McCrory. She will fill the seat designated for a representative of the Governor's Office.

    The Task Force shall prepare and submit to the Governor and General Assembly by Oct. 1, 2015 a comprehensive plan for addressing the underage sale and use of alcohol and drugs, risky behaviors and substance abuse and the provision of treatment and recovery services for individuals struggling with abuse. The term length is two years.

North Carolina Real Estate Commission

  • Robert Ramseur Jr. (Wake County) — Ramseur is a partner at Ragsdale Liggett PLLC and chair of the Real Estate Department.

    The board works to license and regulate real estate brokers and salesmen. The term length is three years.

North Carolina Turnpike Authority

  • James Crawford (Granville County) — Crawford is a former member of the State House of Representatives, serving 14 terms. This is a reappointment.
  • Jake Alexander (Rowan County) — Alexander is the sales director of Genan, Inc. This is a reappointment.
  • Robert Teer Jr. (Durham County)- Teer is the president of Teer Associates in Durham. This is a reappointment.
  • John Collett (Mecklenburg County) — Collett is a founding partner of Collett & Associates. This is a reappointment.

    ​The purpose of the Authority is to study, plan, develop, design, establish, purchase, construct, operate and maintain 3 Turnpike Projects; to study, plan, develop and undertake preliminary design work on 3 additional Turnpike projects; to rent, lease, purchase, acquire, own, encumber, dispose of, or mortgage real or personal property, including the power to acquire property by eminent domain; to fix, revise, charge, and collect tolls and fees for the use of the Turnpike Projects; to issue bonds or notes of the Authority; etc. The term length is four years.

North Carolina Humanities Council

  • Captain Raheem Aleem (Durham County) — Aleem is the community services captain at the Durham County Sheriff's Office.

    The council fosters a civic discourse in the state through a variety of programs which are free and designed for adults. The council provides communities with opportunities to reflect on their traditions, understand and appreciate their culture, coordinate programs to generate mutual understandings which foster common concern and motivate citizens to become better informed. The term length is three years.

North Carolina Council on Educational Services for Exceptional Children

  • Heather Grant (Wilkes County) — Grant is a nurse practitioner at Yadkin Valley Community Hospital.

    The purpose of the Council is to advise the State Board of Education of unmet needs in the education of children with special needs, to comment publicly on rules and regulations proposed by the Board regarding special education and related services, and to develop and report data as required. The term length is two years.

North Carolina Marriage and Family Therapy Licensure Board

  • Tamara Whitten (Pitt County) — Whitten is a licensed marriage & family therapist (LMFT) and certified family life educator in Greenville.
  • Dr. Jenny Haines (Mecklenburg County) — Haines is a LMFT and LPC based in Matthews, NC. Additionally, she is the clinical director for the Pfeiffer Institute of Marriage and Family Therapy.
  • Sherman Childers (Cabarrus County) — Childers is the director of HR and Corporate Education and Manager/Training and Development with Philips Medical Systems North America. This is a reappointment.

    The board ensures that the public has a means of protecting itself from unprofessional, improper, unauthorized and unqualified use of certain titles by persons who practice marriage and family therapy. The term length is four years.

North Carolina Textbook Commission

  • Brian Frees (Henderson County) — Frees is an assistant principal at Flat Rock Middle School in Henderson County.

    The commission evaluates all textbooks offered for adoption. Each textbook shall be read by at least one expert certified in the discipline for which the book would be used. The term length is four years. The members of the Commission shall be appointed by the Governor upon recommendation of the Superintendent.
