News Release:

WASHINGTON, D.C.     Today, Congressman Walter B. Jones (NC-3) voted for two bills to prevent tax evaders from working for the federal government and drawing a salary from taxpayer dollars. The Tax Delinquent Federal Employees Act, H.R. 1563, stipulates that federal employees who are seriously delinquent in paying their federal taxes could be fired and tax-delinquent job applicants could not be hired. The Tax-Delinquent Federal Contractors Act, H.R. 1562, stipulates that federal contractors who are seriously delinquent in paying their federal taxes would be barred from receiving federal contracts. H.R. 1562 passed the House 424 to 0, but H.R. 1563 did not pass the House, failing 266 to 160. Both bills were considered on a suspension of the rules, which requires a two-thirds vote to pass the House.

Last month, the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration, Russell George, reported that the IRS gave over a million dollars in bonuses to tax-delinquent federal employees from 2010 to 2012.

“It is common sense that tax-delinquent individuals and contractors should not be working for the federal government and drawing salaries from hard-earned taxpayer dollars, which is why I voted in favor of these two bills,” said Congressman Jones. “Further, it’s outrageous that the IRS wasted over a million taxpayer dollars in bonuses to tax-delinquent federal employees in just two years. This kind of flagrant abuse of taxpayer money must be stopped.”
