Press Release:

Governor McCrory Calls Decision an 'Important Victory' for North Carolina

Raleigh, N.C. — A federal appeals court this week delivered a major victory in the case brought by 22 states, Governor Pat McCrory and three other governors and one state attorney general challenging President Barack Obama's sweeping executive action on immigration. On Tuesday, the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals refused to lift Texas federal court's injunction halting President Obama's unilateral executive action granting legal status to millions of illegal immigrants.

"This is an important victory for North Carolina and a major milestone in our effort to push back against the President's unprecedented and unlawful overreach of executive authority," said Governor McCrory. "President Obama's executive actions on immigration have serious consequences for states like North Carolina, which must shoulder the burden of these unilateral decisions. I am pleased that the courts have now twice ruled in our favor to uphold the rule of law and our fundamental system of checks and balances."

In his capacity as governor, Governor McCrory joined Texas in December of 2014 to challenge the President's unlawful actions on immigration. In February, a District Court sided with Governor McCrory and the other states when it issued a preliminary injunction against the Obama Administration, halting its implementation of the President's executive order granting legal status to millions of illegal immigrants. In March, the Obama administration appealed that decision to the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals, asking the court to lift the order.
