    Thirty-six graduates of the Beaufort County Early College High School were honored Thursday, May 28, during the school's third graduation exercises. Of those graduates, 25 also received associate degrees from Beaufort County Community College the week before, and 15 will go on to four-year universities. Seven received various scholarships totaling more than $200,000. Congratulations to all of these graduates who, during their five years on the BCCC campus, became a vital and enthusiastic part of our community. And congratulations to all the ECHS and BCCC faculty and staff for helping these students succeed.

    BLET Graduation

    • Seventeen Basic Law Enforcement Training students were recognized in graduation ceremonies Thursday, May 21, at Beaufort County Community College that also included a memorial for a fallen officer. Johnny M. Blaylock of Aurora; Doninic R. Franks and Kelly J. Tate of Bath; Kasey F. Clayton of Belhaven; Aaron M. Moore of Blounts Creek; Isreal E. Roughton, III, of Columbia; Jason A. Bliss of Engelhard; George B. Warner of Greenville; Terrance L. Flaugher of Jamesville; Robert L. King of Ocracoke; William R. Waters of Pinetown; William T. Warren of Stokes; Isaiah S. McCullor of Swan Quarter, and Eric V. Cahoon, Archie J. Quintana, Timothy S. Tetterton and Jedediah D. Zelenky of Washington. Congratulations to all of these graduates!

    BCCC Foundation

    • The BCCC Board of Trustees met on June 2 and appointed the following nominees to serve on the BCCC Foundation Board of Directors for terms beginning July 1, 2015: John Jones, Bill Wall, Bill Zachman, mJohn Piland Jr., Dick Barber, Trina Cobb, Laura Scoble and Zina Burbage.

    They were appointed to three-year terms and will serve until June 2018, with the exception of Scoble, who will fill the remaining term of Radell Rasmussen, expiring in June 2017. The Board of Trustees received a slate of 14 nominees from which to make the eight appointments.

    We would also like to extend our gratitude to Luther Davis, Sue Nicholson, Kendra Paiz, Jerry Waters and Radell Rasmussen for their years of service to the Foundation.

    • Tickets are going fast for the BCCC Foundation's inaugural lawn and garden tour 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, June 20. The tour will begin on the BCCC campus with a rededication of the Rosa Rosebud"

    Roberson rose garden in front of Building 1. Self-drive and group transportation options will be available for those who want to tour 10 beautiful gardens in the Washington and Chocowinity areas.

    Watch June 4, 2015 for more information about this exciting new event! Proceeds will be used for student scholarships.

    • Plans are being made for a trip to Italy in April, 2016 sponsored by the BCCC Foundation and the Washington/Beaufort Chamber of Commerce. An informational meeting on the trip is scheduled for 6 p.m., Tuesday, September 1, in the Multi-Purpose Room of Building 10. Trip brochures will be available soon from the Foundation office. Watch for more information about this exciting opportunity for travel.

    • The Beaufort County Community College Foundation is hosting a trip to Durham on Saturday, June 6 to see the stage production of the 2012 Tony Award Winning musical, Newsies. After lunch at The Tobacco Road Sports Café overlooking the Durham Bulls athletic field, the group will go to DPAC for a matinee performance of Newsies, the musical that won two Tony awards in 2012, including Best Score.

    College Grill

    • The College Grill is now closed for the summer and will reopen Tuesday, August 4, and will be open from 7:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. for the fall semester. Have a great summer!

    Travel/Study Group

    • BCCC's Travel/Study Group is back from its trip to Belize. Led by Instructor Suzanne Stotesbury, the group explored the environment and culture of the Central American country for about a week (You can see photos of the group on the BCCC Facebook page). Its members have begun preparing and raising money to defray the cost of their trip next spring to Ireland. Tie-dyed T-shirts are available for sale in sizes small through extra large from Suzanne by calling 252-940-6339 or by email at suzanne.stotesbury@beaufortccc.edu.

    • Congratulations to Susan Hodges, who has accepted the position of Curriculum Data Clerk.

    • Penelope Radcliffe is also joining BCCC as Basic Skills Admissions and Assessment Specialist.

    • We will miss Purchasing Coordinator Jane Alligood, who is leaving as of June 30 to take a new position as Director of Purchasing and Contracts for Pitt Community College.

    • During the summer, Tansey Topics will appear every two weeks instead of every week. Watch your email for the next edition on Thursday, June 18.

    3-D Modeling and Printing

    The Personal Enrichment class on Understanding 3-D Modeling and Printing has been rescheduled and revamped to be a Kids College offering. It will be held Tuesdays and Thursdays, June 16 to June

    30, from 12:30-3:30 p.m. and is open to anyone who is a rising 8th-grader or older. Instructor Matthew Lincoln will guide students to create a computer model for an object and print it on the 3-D printer. Faculty, staff, and their kids are welcome to come learn about this incredible piece of equipment. Registration fee, $75. Email Clay Carter for more information, clayc@beaufortccc.edu.

    BCCC Honor Roll and Dean's List

    • The Registrar's Office at Beaufort County Community College has released the honor roll for the 2015 Spring Semester. Full-time students maintaining a grade point average, or GPA, of 4.0 or better were placed on the All "A"s list. Students maintaining a 3.5 GPA were placed on the Dean's List. Look for the full list of names in the Washington Daily News and on BCCC's Facebook page.

    Be prepared for 2015 Hurricane Season

    • Hurricane Season officially began June 1, although Mother Nature jumped the gun this year with Tropical Storm Ana, which impacted the Carolinas over Mother's Day weekend.

    It is important to plan ahead for severe weather events and to review your emergency plans each year. Update emergency supply kits and make note of evacuation routes. When severe weather causes

    safety concerns or disrupts College operations, the BCCC Administration tries to make a decision whether to continue, postpone or cancel classes by 6 a.m. the day of severe weather, but this may

    not always be possible. When a decision is made, the information is posted on the BCCC website and Campus Delays or Closings, and an announcement is recorded on the main phone number to BCCC

    (252-946-6194.) BCCC will also send out text alert messages to those who have registered for this service - http://www.beaufortccc.edu/gneral/police/contact.htm.

    Also remember that BCCC's Building 8 serves as a Secondary Emergency Shelter for Beaufort County. And in the coming week, watch for the following:

     •  June 12 - Talk of the Town from the Washington Waterfront with Stacey Gerard and Lentz Stowe, 7 a.m.

     •  June 30 - Last Day to Drop without grade penalty for Summer Term.

I had the privilege last night of hearing both Mrs. Tansey and our Superintendent of Schools. They are collaborating to give us one of the leading school systems in NC!

I will be giving a report later today on the event . . .
