There were entertainers in all branches of the service who seemed to escape the day to day routines by practicing among buddies while recluses disappeared to read book or write home.

They were happy alone or with listeners and not expecting applause or admiration. No effort was made to create a band or seek a stage or organize backup singers.

Some tried to write songs, and I remember some strange lyrics.

Soon a crowd would gather and some joined in.

I wish we had digital recorders instead of tape machines.

Or some modern electronics or cell phones for selfies: just cameras with 35mm film to send for developing. Good ole days.
