Press Release:

Raleigh, N.C. — Governor Pat McCrory's Connect NC bond initiative will pump $734 million into our state's distinguished universities and community colleges for facility upgrades and improvements. Of that, $534 million will be directed to the University of North Carolina System and $200 million will be allocated for drastically needed improvements at our 58 community colleges.

"A highly educated workforce is vital to North Carolina's future prosperity and economic development," Governor McCrory said. "These important investments in our universities and community colleges will ensure we are preparing students for the careers of the 21st century, particularly those studying in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics."

Connect NC will provide funding for 10 universities in the UNC System, particularly to build state-of-the-art science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) facilities to better prepare our students for careers in these high-demand fields. Of the universities to receive bond proceeds, five are Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). The proposed investment in HBCUs recognizes the role that these institutions play in training students to become productive members of the workforce.

Additionally, the bond package will support much needed repairs and renovations at all 58 community college campuses. These improvements are needed to retrofit and repair existing space and facilities to meet the workforce demands of today and the future.

Connect NC is targeted investments in North Carolina's roads, education, public health, parks and military. From small farming towns to large cities, Connect NC projects will benefit every community across the state while creating thousands of jobs along the way.

Because of the state's fiscal strength and strong balance sheet, no tax increase is needed to fund the bonds and the state's AAA bond rating would be preserved.
