A Tale of Two Boys | Eastern North Carolina Now

Clump and Gump were their last names. They were born right after the Second World War. The entire country had been in a struggle to fund both war and civilian living at the same time. War had grown to consume approximately 60% of all goods and income for living. The need to cover the costs of feeding, housing, caring for millions of soldiers in a foreign country was astronomical.

To get fuel and weapons halfway round the world took a tremendous and costly supply line. Suffering and sacrifice had become everyday words for many. There was no such thing as nice housing, cars, steak for the majority of the public. Everyone shouldered the responsibility to participate. They bought limited gas according to the ration book they were issued. Many had gathered every piece of metal they could spare from the kitchen or shed and gave it to be melted down for war materials.

It was tough, but they pulled together because America needed the help of each citizen to win a war on two fronts---Europe and Japan.

Clump was born into wealth. Gump was struggling in the rundown neighborhood of working poor. They were both in a large northern city and now the war was over and people were getting back to normal and restoring America to a post-war footing.

Don Clump was somewhat spoiled. His dad worked long hours making his money off the poor and rundown neighborhoods. Some of his holdings were tenement houses. Others were in foreclosure. He bought and resold them at a significant profit. He was a master at turning a dollar. It did not bother him who he had to take advantage of to make more money. Pretty soon he started working a scheme to move immigrant and black families into the neighborhoods in transition.

He had a slick concept of getting 2-3 families together since they could barely afford the small community house. All the neighbors were old and scared as their community changed. After about 3-4 lower class families moved, in they were playing on the streets into the dark of night. What was a quiet community was now becoming obnoxious. Mr. Clump went to the old folks wanting to move with an offer on their house. It was 1/3 the price they should have been paid, but frightened and frustrated old folks get desperate and one-by-one they began to sell. They were quickly tired of misbehaving kids playing on their car parked on the street since there was no off street parking or a garage. The kids were pulling pranks by peeking in their windows as well. Their retirement peace was quickly becoming a hell of transition.

Into each house he began to "help" disadvantaged people move in. They could not get loans so he financed them at 3 times the normal rate. It did not matter if they lost it back to him in foreclosure. He was a "good businessman" and could care less if they failed. He still had the house to resale on the same basis to some unsuspecting and hopeful poor family. As he made more and more money, his bank account and credit grew to the point he could now buy big tenement building and became a Slum Lord. It did not bother him that people were complaining of high rent and rundown apartments. If the roof or pipes leaked, he put off the expensive repairs. He bribed any inspectors to keep passing the building without condemning it or forcing him to make repairs.

He was getting richer by the day. His boy was getting more obnoxious in school to the point he was disturbing his classmates with obnoxious behavior. Many were calling the aggressive kid a Bully, but his daddy had money so the school officials feared to confront it.

Finally, the father realized he was a failure on discipline so he took a little of his money to enroll his son in a private military school. He was sure the new discipline of that school would teach some behavior lessons. Instead, his son rose in rank because his father was a big benefactor to the school. There he began to use his rank to abuse other lower ranking students and make them submit to his orders which were obnoxious and overbearing. Now he was a Bully with rank.

Don Gump, meanwhile at the same age, was growing up in a poor neighborhood. He joined a gang for some prestige and protection. His parents moved into one of those houses sold by Don Gump's father. He and his gang loved to harass the old folks who were already scared. They enjoyed sitting on cars and daring the old folks to make them get off. Once in a while they threw rocks through the windows if those old folks didn't stop their complaints. That stopped them and soon they moved out so more gang members could gather on the streets.

After a year, that old retirement community with well-kept yards started to show neglect. The grass grew to knee height. The pretty flowers were overgrown with weeds. The roofs, already suffering from old folks on limited incomes unable to replace them, began to really leak and --- over the years --- the formerly pristine old homes were nothing but shacks with porches collapsing from rotted supports. Finally, the city condemned the entire block and built Public Housing.

That housing was built on tax money for the poor who needed better housing. Strange enough, Mr. Clump had gotten into politics and used his wealth and influence to form a ghost company which built and managed the Public Housing. His fancy lawyer did a good job of covering any Conflict of Interest to gain profit from it by a Public Servant elected to his position!

Mr. Clump had no problems keeping his son in private military school and then going to get a degree in Real Estate from a State School --- instead of the expensive Ivy League one he could afford. As soon as the son graduated, he went to work for his dad to grow the burgeoning Real Estate Empire coming into prominence.

Don Clump wanted to look more Executive so he made people start calling him "Donald" or "Mr. Clump." If you wanted to lose your job, show any disrespect. Pretty soon all the employees feared his quick temper and tendency to fire immediately anyone who disrespected him.

The Donald married a beauty queen of a wife pretty soon. They moved to an exclusive neighborhood and put on a show attending all the big Social Events. They met prominent people who were in Finance and Law as well as Real Estate and Entertainment. If you had the bucks, you could move in their circles of influence.

Donald Clump was an up-and-comer now in his late 30's. He began to look at other women and pretty soon his marriage collapsed. His dad got him good divorce lawyer who managed to get him out with little or nothing to his former wife. She had to go home to her parents.

Meanwhile, a man named Donald Trump was pursuing his dream of wealth:

One of Trump's first projects, while he was still in college, was the revitalization of the foreclosed Swifton Village apartment complex in Cincinnati, Ohio, which his father had purchased for $5.7 million in 1962. The Trumps became involved in the project and with a $500,000 investment, turned the 1,200-unit complex with a 66 percent vacancy rate to 100 percent occupancy within two years. In 1972, the Trump Organization sold Swifton Village for $6.75 million. Donald's involvement with the project was to perform some landscaping and menial labor.[33]

In 1971, Trump moved to Manhattan and became involved in larger building projects and used attractive architectural design to win public recognition.[10] He made plans to acquire and develop the old Penn Central for $60 million with no money down.[34] Later, with the help of a 40-year tax abatement from the New York City government, he turned the bankrupt Commodore Hotel into the Grand Hyatt[35] and created The Trump Organization.[36]

New York City had a plan to build the Javits Convention Center on property for which Trump held a right-to-buy option. Trump estimated his company could have completed the project for $110 million[37] but the city rejected his offer and Trump received a broker's fee on the sale of the property instead. Repairs on The Wollman Rink in Central Park (built in 1955) were started in 1980 with an expected 21/2-year construction schedule but was nowhere near completion by 1986. Trump took over the management of the project, at no cost to the city, and completed it in three months for $1.95 million, which was $750,000 less than the initial budget.[38]

In 1988, Trump acquired the Taj Mahal Casino in a transaction with Merv Griffin and Resorts International.[39] This expansion, both personal and business, led to mounting debt.[40]

By 1989, poor business decisions left Trump unable to meet loan payments. Trump financed the construction of his third casino, the $1 billion Taj Mahal, primarily with high-interest junk bonds. Although he shored up his businesses with additional loans and postponed interest payments, by 1991, increasing debt brought Trump to business bankruptcy[40] and to the brink of personal bankruptcy. Banks and bond holders had lost hundreds of millions of dollars, but opted to restructure his debt to avoid the risk of losing more money in court. The Taj Mahal emerged from bankruptcy on October 5, 1991, with Trump ceding 50 percent ownership in the casino to the original bondholders in exchange for lowered interest rates on the debt and more time to pay it off.[41]

The late 1990s saw a resurgence in his financial situation. In 2001, he completed Trump World Tower, a 72-story residential tower across from the United Nations Headquarters.[42] Also, he began construction on Trump Place, a multi-building development along the Hudson River. Trump owns commercial space in Trump International Hotel and Tower, a 44-story mixed-use (hotel and condominium) tower on Columbus Circle. Trump owns several million square feet of prime Manhattanreal estate.[43]

Trump has developed many real estate projects, such as Trump International Hotel and Tower - Honolulu, Trump International Hotel and Tower - Chicago, Trump International Hotel and Tower - Toronto, and Trump Tower - Tampa. In Fort Lauderdale, Florida, one of Trump's construction projects was put on hold in favor of another (Trump International Hotel and Tower - Fort Lauderdale). Meanwhile, Trump Towers Atlanta One was developed in a housing market having the nation's second-highest inventory of unsold homes.[44]

In 2015, Forbes estimated his net worth at $4.1 billion.[2] In June 2015, Business Insider published a June 30, 2014, financial statement supplied by Trump. The statement reflects his net worth as $8.7 billion. Of that amount, $3.3 billion is represented by "Real Estate Licensing Deals, Brand and Branded Developments", described by Business Insider as "basically [implying] that Trump values his character at $3.3 billion".[45] In July 2015, the Federal election regulators released new details of his wealth and financial holdings when he became a Republican presidential candidate.

Here are my reasons for running as fast as possible from such a charlatan:

• Trump said "I've used the laws of this country to pare debt. ... We'll have the company. We'll throw it into a chapter. We'll negotiate with the banks. We'll make a fantastic deal. You know, it's like on 'The Apprentice'. It's not personal. It's just business."[152] He indicated that other "great entrepreneurs" do the same.[150]
• To put his philosophy of business in simple terms: No matter how many people I have to rip off, I will come out on top and walk sideways through raindrops of debt.
• He flies in a big commercial-size jet with his name emblazoned on its side---as did the Executives of GM / Ford / and Chrysler to ask for more government money to keep them from declaring bankruptcy --- a point of valid criticism as us taxpayers eventually owned 62% of GM with their cars not reduced a cent to the buying public.
• He is a perfect example of Deficit Finance and waste. If such prepares him to lead a country drowning in war debt, then he is the perfect Conservative Candidate!
• His ego requires obedience without compromise --- how does that suit a diplomat who daily must look for consensus of representatives in Congress?
• If we need a Dictator, then Donald Trump is the perfectly trained candidate to give it.

The discussion over the Debate last night are interesting and everywhere. I have watched all the way from ABC / CNN / Fox / Al Jazeera. The general take is that Trump did well, Jeb kept too quiet / Marco Rubio makes good sense along with Mike Huckabee. Another debate next month with Democrats up in October . . .

Thanks for the hard and long day yesterday, Stan --- yet getting my article in.

I shut down my comments and went to bed after the first hour. They asked The Donald the big question then over his Business dealings and bankruptcies.
His answer: "All Entrepreneurs do it!"
I thought Entrepreneur meant "daring businessman" rather than THIEF!!!
