Verna Margarette Latham | Eastern NC Now

    Mrs. Verna Margarette Phelps Latham, age 95, a resident of Washington, died Monday, October 5, 2015 at River Trace Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

    Memorial services will be 2:00 pm Friday October 9, 2015 at Paul Funeral Home & Crematory of Washington and will be conducted by Rev. Phil Hayes. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

    Mrs. Latham was born October 13, 1919 in Pitt County to the late Leon and Ida Moore Phelps. She was a graduate of Grimesland High School and worked at Fowle Memorial Hospital where she received her LPN license. On July 18, 1938 she married Augustus Oden "Cutie" Latham who preceded her in death on April 17, 1981. She was employed with Small's Bookstore and was a teller with Wachovia Bank for 30 years. Mrs. Latham volunteered at Vidant Beaufort Hospital since 1981 and received the Governor's award for volunteering. She was past matron of the Washington Chapter 7 Order of Eastern Starr, former member of First Christian Church and was a member of Second Baptist Church.

    Survivors include her son A. Oden Latham, Jr. and wife Fonda of Tyler Texas, four grandchildren, Lisa Baldwin, Chris Latham, Joe Latham, Adam Richardson and nine great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by four brothers.
