Executive Mansion and Western Residence to be Lit Pink

Raleigh, N.C.     Governor Pat McCrory and First Lady Ann McCrory are lighting the Executive Mansion in Raleigh and the Western Residence in Asheville pink Friday night to recognize Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The governor proclaimed October Breast Cancer Awareness Month in North Carolina to raise awareness about the disease and life-saving detection and treatment efforts.

"Ann and I are committed to raising awareness for this disease, reminding people of the treatments and preventive measures available, and supporting the efforts to find a cure," said Governor McCrory. "Nothing compares to the life-saving innovation and research being conducted throughout our state to treat and cure cancer, especially breast cancer."

As stated in the proclamation, breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among women in the United States, and is the second-leading cause of cancer deaths among women in North Carolina and our nation.

In addition to lighting the mansion and residence pink to raise awareness, the governor and first lady are reminding families about the importance of regular screening and early detection for breast cancer.

"Almost every family has had some kind of personal connection to breast cancer," said First Lady Ann McCrory. "We are encouraging citizens to talk with their families, doctors and health care providers about regular screenings, examinations and mammograms to help save lives."

Statistics show that regular screenings prevent 15 to 30 percent of all deaths from breast cancer in women over 40. Early detection is also critical. When diagnosed while still confined to the breast, the five-year relative survival rate for breast cancer is more than 98 percent.
