    GREENVILLE     Dr. Gerhardt Winkel, a board certified general surgeon, joined Vidant General Surgery - Washington located at 615 E. 12 Street, on Dec. 28.

    Winkel earned his medical degree from the University of Iowa College of Medicine. His areas of interest include laparoscopic and open surgery, vein procedures, including: ablations, sclerotherapy, phlebectomies, hernia repairs, and appendectomies.

    "I enjoy helping people, whether it's an elective procedure or emergency surgery. It is rewarding for me to make a positive impact on people's lives. I consider it a great privilege to help people in their time of need," Winkel said. "My family and I are very excited to move to Washington. We enjoy raising livestock and farming and also raise service dogs to be placed with wounded veterans. Vidant - Beaufort has the amenities of a big-city hospital, yet is small enough for me to know my patients and staff."
