Dick Van Dyke's 90th Birthday celebration | Eastern NC Now

    This little fluff post was prompted by a video I saw of the ninetieth celebration of Dick Van Dike, the veteran, actor, comedian, writer, singer, dancer, and producer on December 13.

    The Video shows flash mob in Los Angeles with Dick watching and eventually joining in.

    Many will remember Dick for his TV Show with Mary Tyler Moore and his Movies with Julie Andrews. Some will remember his as later character Dr. Mark Sloan pm the TV show Diagnosis: Murder.

    "During the late 1940s, Van Dyke was a radio DJ in Danville, Illinois. In 1947, Van Dyke was persuaded by Phil Erickson to form a comedy duo with him called "Eric and Van-the Merry Mutes." The team toured the West Coast nightclub circuit, performing a mime act and lip synching to old 78 records. They brought their act to Atlanta, Georgia, in the early 1950s and performed a local television show featuring original skits and music called The Merry Mutes. He went on to perform for a while as a member of the Wit's End Players, which was an institution in Atlanta entertainment circles. Here is the link to Wikipedia

    Most would not remember that he also had a local TV show in Atlanta, Georgia. That has given me the opportunity to insert myself into this story, which is what any good narcissist would do. They had a piano contest on the show where various young piano players competed for a prize. I have forgotten about what the prize was but my brother Jimmy entered the contest and played my mother's favorite Liberace song "I'll be Seeing You" for the competition. At the end of the rendition, I came into the scene as Liberace's brother George with a violin in my hand a fake mustache. I was seven year sold. Jim did not win the competition but I credit that with the beginning of my narcissistic compulsion to be the center of all things.

    But let's get back to Dick. He went on to a very successful career as listed above. Here is the video of the celebration of his 90th Flash mob.
