Governor emphasizes digital learning and rewarding teachers

Raleigh, N.C. - Governor Pat McCrory joined members of the Governor's Teacher Advisory Committee today to highlight the work they have done to improve education in North Carolina. The governor charged the committee with providing feedback and recommendations on top priorities including increasing access to digital learning, bringing business and education leaders together to close the skills gap, and rewarding teachers.

Since Governor McCrory entered office in January 2013, North Carolina has committed more than $1 billion to teacher raises. The governor underscored the importance of providing a career ladder that will keep our best teachers in the classroom.

"As a former student teacher, I know the challenges teachers face first-hand and I'm proud of the progress we've made in improving teacher pay," said Governor McCrory. "We recognize that teachers want a career ladder that allows them to progress and improve in their profession."

Governor McCrory also stressed his commitment to bridge the digital divide by providing the technology infrastructure needed to continue moving toward a digital learning plan for all schools. This includes not only infrastructure for classroom connectivity, but also providing training for teachers on how to use digital resources effectively.

"We must prepare students for the careers of the future using technology that allows teachers to utilize a variety of platforms to teach our students," said Governor McCrory. "We are on track to meet our goal of connecting all North Carolina classrooms with WiFi by 2018."

The governor emphasized the importance of supporting college and career ready standards in k-12 education. He also highlighted the critical role of our 58 community colleges in preparing students for careers of the 21st century.
