Raleigh, N.C.     Governor Pat McCrory announced he has nominated Robert Schurmeier, Jr. as director of the State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) during a ceremony today at the Executive Mansion.

"The State Bureau of Investigation has remained an important part of protecting the security and safety of all citizens of North Carolina, the number one priority of my administration," said Governor McCrory. "As a law enforcement veteran and proven executive, Robert Schurmeier will be a strong leader for the SBI and our state."

Schurmeier is a law enforcement veteran with nearly 30 years of experience with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department, retiring in 2004 as deputy chief over Investigations. During his tenure, Schurmeier served in Patrol, Investigations, Support Services and Administration divisions and pioneered initiatives that have become models for other law enforcement agencies, including forging partnerships to establish procedures and training to better preserve forensic evidence.

Since 2004, Schurmeier has served as president of a private investigative and security consulting firm that has supported businesses and government agencies including the United States Department of Homeland Security.

Schurmeier is a past president of the North Carolina Chapter of the FBI National Academy Associates and the North Carolina Police Executives Association. He is a graduate of the Secret Service's Dignitary Protection School, the Senior Management Institute for Police and the FBI National Academy.

A North Carolina native, Schurmeier is a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and has post-graduate studies at the University of Virginia and University of North Carolina at Charlotte. Schurmeier and his wife Tricia have one daughter.

The SBI director is appointed by the governor and confirmed by the General Assembly for an eight-year term. The agency has been led by acting director Janie Sutton since the retirement of Director B.W. Collier effective April 1.

The State Bureau of Investigation assists local law enforcement with criminal investigations and has original jurisdiction in drug and arson investigations, election law violations, child sexual abuse in day care centers and computer crimes against children.
