Tillis Hosts Senate Luncheon Featuring North Carolina Foods and Products | Eastern North Carolina Now

    WASHINGTON, DC     Today, Senator Thom Tillis (R-NC) showcased several North Carolina foods and products during the Senate GOP's Thursday Lunch Group. Each week, one Republican senator hosts the Thursday Lunch Group to showcase cuisine from their respective states.

    "It was an honor to treat my colleagues to a fantastic North Carolina meal and show them what real barbecue tastes like," said Senator Tillis. "I'm also pleased that my colleagues are bringing home a great sampling of food and agricultural products from North Carolina, as well as items adorned with the logos of some of our state's outstanding public universities."

    Today's lunch was catered by Parker's Barbecue, a Greenville, North Carolina institution. During the lunch, Senator Tillis introduced and thanked Parker's Barbecue owner Billy Parker, who traveled to Washington, D.C. to prepare the meal for the senators.

    The menu included:

  • Whole hog barbecue
  • Fried chicken
  • Brunswick stew
  • Cole slaw
  • Mac & cheese
  • Cornsticks
  • NC garden salad
  • Fried okra
  • Pork skins
  • Krispy Kreme doughnuts

    Additionally, the senators received gift bags filled with the following North Carolina products:

  • Cheerwine (Salisbury, NC)
  • North Carolina Peanuts (Nashville, NC)
  • Scott Farms Sweet Potatoes (Lucama, NC)
  • Sun Dog 130 Corn Whisky (Concord, NC)
  • Texas Pete (Winston-Salem, NC)

    Also included in the gift bags were items from the following North Carolina universities: East Carolina University Pirate koozie, Elizabeth City State paper clip, North Carolina State pen and stadium cup, UNC-Chapel Hill knapsack and stadium cup, UNC-Charlotte pen, UNC School of the Arts carpenter pencil, UNC Wilmington pen and stadium Cup, Western Carolina University pen and lapel pin.


    No taxpayer funds were used to purchase the lunch or North Carolina products.
