Voluntary groups play underappreciated role in making decisions

Libertarians are often accused - with some justification - of relying too much on free markets as the answer to all of society's thorny public policy questions.

Duke University political scientist and economist Michael Munger says libertarians also should emphasize the importance of freely associating voluntary groups in making choices. Those voluntary groups offer an alternative to the coercive power of government.

Munger delves into this issue detail in the 2015 book Choosing In Groups. He shared key themes from the book in a presentation for the John Locke Foundation's Shaftesbury Society. In the video clip above, Munger explains how voluntary groups offer an alternative to market and government.
