Press Release:

Cooper Declines To Multi-State Lawsuit To Fight Obama Directive To Schools And Preserve Federal Funding

Raleigh, N.C.     NCGOP Chairman Robin Hayes criticized Roy Cooper for refusing to sign on to the multi-state lawsuit challenging the Obama administration over its directive mandating school-aged boys and girls be allowed to share the same showers, locker rooms and restrooms. The lawsuit also seeks to preserve federal funding to schools amid threats from the Obama administration to states and local school districts that their funding would be cut off if they don't comply with the directive.

Earlier today, The Daily Dispatch questioned Roy Cooper on whether or not his office will join the multi-state lawsuit challenging Obama's directive, and Cooper said he has no intention of joining the lawsuit. Because Roy Cooper refused to do his job and defend the state, the UNC Board of Governors today asked the attorney general's office to pay their outside legal bills.

"Roy Cooper's job is to protect North Carolina but he hasn't lifted a finger to push back against the Obama administration and protect North Carolina's federal funding for critical services," said NCGOP Chairman Robin Hayes. "And while other states step up and sue to block the president's directive to schools and preserve their federal funding, Roy Cooper's refusal to do his job is only putting our children at risk."

The Obama administration sent every school district across North Carolina and the country a new directive to outline a new policy to allow school-aged boys and girls be allowed to share the same showers, locker rooms and restrooms or lose federal funding. Twelve states have now sued the Obama administration to block the President's directive and preserve federal funding, but Attorney General Roy Cooper's office hasn't stepped up to represent North Carolina in the suit.

Last week, Missouri's Democrat attorney general and candidate for governor Chris Koster said the Obama administration was "wrong" to issue a directive to the nation's public schools to allow transgender students to use bathrooms and locker rooms that match their gender identity.
