    The following classes are available through the Continuing Education Department at BCCC. To register, call 252-940-6375 or email continuingeducation@beaufortccc.edu.

Substance Abuse Counselor

    Students can get certified to be a substance abuse counselor online. This certification can be a great step for people looking to enter the counseling field or to advance in their current position as nurses, mental health counselors and family service providers. A certified substance abuse counselor performs twelve core functions, including screening, intake, orientation, assessment, treatment planning, counseling, case management, crisis intervention, client education, report and record keeping, consultation with other professionals in regard to client treatment and services, and referral to treat addictive disorder or disease and help prevent relapse. Beverly Cates and Loretta Ebison will lead this online program. This course satisfies credits for education and ethics toward NC Substance Abuse Professional Practice Board. An additional practicum will still be required of students to achieve state certification. The program begins on August 22.

Administrative Office Assistant

    Professional office assistants can advance or brush up on developments in their field by getting certified as an administrative office assistant. This program will specifically address working with the Windows 7 operating system, file management, and selected Microsoft Office 2013 application programs. Students will experience the commonly used features of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint to understand these features' purpose, and use them with ease and confidence for the home and office. Upon the successful completion of the program, a students will receive a certificate. The program begins on August 29.

Residential Wiring

    This course introduces the tools and materials used in electrical installations and the requirements of the National Electrical Code. Topics include NEC, electrical safety, and electrical blueprint reading. Students will learn planning and layout, along with installation of electrical distribution equipment. Lighting, overcurrent protection, conductors, branch circuits and conduits will also be discussed. Upon completion, students should be able to properly install conduits, wiring, and electrical distribution equipment associated with basic electrical installations. This class will take place on Mondays from 6:00 p.m. to 9:50 p.m. beginning on August 16.The fee for the class is $181.25.

Engine Performance

    This course covers the introduction, theory of operation, and basic diagnostic procedures required to restore engine performance to vehicles equipped with complex engine control systems. Topics include an overview of engine operation, ignition components and systems and fuel delivery. Students will also learn about injection components and systems, as well as emission control devices. Upon completion, students should be able to describe operation and diagnose and repair basic ignition, fuel and emission-related drivability problems using the appropriate test equipment or service information. Students will need to bring with them a hand tool set to class. This is a basic set that includes wrenches, sockets, screwdrivers and pliers. This class starts on August 16 and takes place on Wednesdays and Thursdays from 6:00 p.m. to 9:50 p.m. The fee for this class is $181.25 and it requires a textbook.

Keyboarding for Job Seekers

    This class is designed to make job seekers more confident in their typing skills. Using a free online tool, the instructor will lead students through basic keyboarding practices. In addition, students will have typing assignments each week to hone their skills. At the completion of class, students will know their average words per minute. This class is a prerequisite for the MS Word for the Job Seeker class. This class starts on August 24 and will take place on Wednesdays from 9:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. The $75 fee for this class can be waived for qualifying individuals.

Overcoming Barriers to Employment Success

    Dr. John Liptak has published numerous books, study guides and developed several programs around "Career Services". In this class, Lillian Chapman will us his guidelines to teach individuals how to evaluate and overcome personal and financial barriers, emotional and physical barriers, career decision-making and planning barriers, job-seeking knowledge barriers, and education and training barriers. Students will receive a participant's guide to allow them to participate in hands-on activities. This class starts on August 22 and will take place on Mondays from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. The $130 fee can be waived for qualifying individuals. The class requires a workbook that must be purchased before classes begin.

Notary Public

    This course is required for persons wanting to apply for notary public commissions for the State of North Carolina. Various topics related to the duties of a notary public will be covered. Individuals should review the Notary qualifications list on the Secretary of State's web site located at: http://www.secretary.state.nc.us/notary/ prior to registering for class. Per NC Secretary of State Guidelines, students will have to pass an exam to complete the class requirements. Students will be required to show a state issued photo ID and their social security card at the first night of class. This class takes place on August 26 from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and requires a textbook. The fee for the class is $70.

Dog-walking class celebrates 10 years, professor’s service award
