Lafayette Escadrille Event - Veteran's Day, November 11, 2016 | Eastern North Carolina Now

Press Release:

    Dear AOP members,

I am writing to share an invitation to join us at the Arts of the Pamlico's Historic Turnage Theatre on Veteran's Day, November 11, 2016 at 1 PM for a day of remembrance and celebration.

At the start of World War I, many young American men joined the Allied cause and the French Air Service as volunteers in the Lafayette Flying Corps, having a number of squadrons comprised of 269 Americans. By the end of the war, American pilots in French service could claim 199 confirmed victories. James Henry Baugham of Washington, NC was part of this effort, with two confirmed and two unconfirmed downings of German aircraft. He died from wounds received in aerial combat at age 19.

On November 11, 2016, in honor of our Veterans, the Arts of the Pamlico will once again show the acclaimed movie about the role of Washington native James Baugham in WWI in the film entitled Lafayette Escadrille. This movie premiered on the world stage at the Turnage Theatre in 1958 following a parade on Main Street.

Please join us for this special event on the big screen at the historic Turnage Theatre on November 11, 2016 from 1 - 3 PM. A display of memorabilia and historical photographs and papers about Baugham's role will be displayed. Baugham family members will be present.

The movie will start at 1:30 PM. Beverages and popcorn will be offered for sale before and during the event. The Turnage Theatre is located at 150 West Main Street, Washington, NC 27889.

This event is free to the public. Donations gratefully accepted to support this remembrance and celebration of our own WWI hero, James Henry Baugham.

If you have questions about this event, please call (252)946-2504.

    Sincerely,

    Debra Torrence
