A book Review: Trumped - A Nation on the Brink of ruin and How to Bring It Back | Eastern North Carolina Now

Do not let the title fool you. This is not an endorsement book for Trump. I suspect the title is to gain attention that seems to come with the mention of TRUMP. This book is about David Stockman's belief that we are in for a big bubble bust in our monetary system.

Trumped A Nation on the Brink of ruin and How to Bring It Back
    By David Stockman
    Published by Laissez Faire Books
    Baltimore, Maryland
   ISBN 978-1-6212918-4-8

This isn't an easy evening read. For that reason, only the most dedicated and faithful citizens need to begin reading it. David is an equal opportunity basher of both parties, including his former boss Ronald Reagan.

His basic premise is that we no longer live in a capitalist economy but:

That's not old fashioned capitalism at work; it's the fruit of a perverted regime of printing press money and debt-fueled faux prosperity that has been foisted on the nation by bipartisan ruling elites. (page 3)

He provides a road map on possible solutions. Mr. Stockman is a numbers man and he uses numbers graphs and factual documentation to back up his claim that we are no better off than we were at the turn of the century (2000) in real money adjusted. He breaks the flask that drink from when we over print money, add debt, and over promise solutions by government action.

Here is a summary of the above.

  1. A peace Deal with Putin
  2. A Jobs Deal
  3. A Sound_Money Deal
  4. A Glass-Steagall Deal
  5. A Federalist Deal
  6. A Regulatory Deal
  7. A Liberty Deal
  8. A Health Care Deal
  9. A Fiscal Deal
  10. A Governance Deal

This is no puff piece of work offered to sooth the soul of the naïve. It is a call to action that only the public can demand. The book was written before the election and it has its share of Trump bashing included. Suffice it to say that David Stockman is not a big fan of politicians who say anything to get elected. Now that the election is over the real work begins. I would hope that President Elect Trump will cast a wide net for many opinions outside of the Washington corridor for solutions.

Here is one last quote from the book which I hope provokes your further interest.

In the great scheme of history, The Donald's role may be to merely disrupt and paralyze the status quo. And that much he may well accomplish whether he is elected or not.

Some will feel a sense of elation with the election of Donald Trump. However, I only feel a sense of frustration that our deeply divided country is split between two philosophical beliefs.

After we get past the personal fallibility of our candidates, we are left with a system of our own making. The question is now and has always been a simple fundamental philosophy of government.

Is it the government's responsibility to fix all economic and social wrongs?

Or

Is it the government's responsibility to provide a free and competitive environment with a level playing field for business and personal growth?

Great post B.T.

I love Stockman has done with the hair. Hell, at this point in my life, I'm impressed with anyone that has hair ... even you.

Stockman could be wrong, and he could be right about the collapse; nothing is certain.

The one thing that he is right about is the math of a "debt-fueled faux prosperity" is completely on target, and the eventuality of a collapse is very real, probably a 100% real, if we don't not only start doing something about it now, but continue to educate future generations that something must be continued, or we will fail as a nation.
