Duke researcher explores legislative pay raises



    It’s hard for state lawmakers to pursue a pay raise without pushback. But Duke University political scientist Nicholas Carnes looks beyond the political calculations to examine the impact of higher pay on the way lawmakers do their work.

    Carnes shared his findings Monday with the John Locke Foundation’s Shaftesbury Society.


N.C. Chief Justice Martin heads to Legislative Building to push ‘Raise the Age’



    The head of North Carolina’s judicial branch of government headed to the seat of the legislative branch Monday afternoon to tout the “Raise the Age” campaign.

    Supreme Court Chief Justice Mark Martin led a news conference supporting the campaign to treat most nonviolent 16- and 17-year-old criminal offenders as juveniles.
