RALEIGH: Governor Roy Cooper has declared May 10 as State Employee Appreciation Day, and the week of May 7 - 13, 2017 as State Employee Recognition Week.

The week recognizes the essential public service role state employees play in the lives of North Carolina residents and visitors.

"North Carolina is known for having hardworking, helpful and dedicated employees who provide valuable services to every citizen of the state," Gov. Cooper said in a video message to state employees. "I want you to know how valued and appreciated you are - not just from me, but from people all over this great state."

Approximately 85,000 state employees serve in North Carolina. State employees work in a variety of roles and have many responsibilities, including workers who build and repair roads, teach students and support schools, solve crimes and keep communities safe, recruit new jobs and help businesses grow, treat patients and promote health, protect our air and water, operate state parks and museums and much more.

Governor Cooper issued a proclamation to honor state employees and set aside a special week of appreciation for their work.

Governor Cooper and First Lady Kristin Cooper will also welcome state employees to the North Carolina Executive Mansion Wednesday, May 10 from 5:00-6:30 p.m. to thank them for their dedication to state service.

North Carolina's celebration of state employees and their crucial work coincides with the national observance of State Employee Day.
