This year, 2012, we will be voting on candidates to fill positions from the local level straight to Washington DC. The current economic climate throughout the world should cause us to closely measure what is important.

   This year, 2012, we will be voting on candidates to fill positions from the local level straight to Washington DC. The current economic climate throughout the world should cause us to closely measure what is important. It is apparent that spending money that is not ours to spend has got to stop. Borrowing money to pay debts is a fools bet.

   Last year during the county budget debate, I realized how deep the problem in Beaufort County was regarding taxes, spending, and preferential treatment towards certain groups. I stood up at the Community College with many other citizens and asked – no, demanded – that the commissioners do their job to cut waste in the budget and not raise taxes. I watched as the Democrats, with the two soft “Republicans”, ignore the voices of the citizens – the tax payers – and conducted “business as usual”. Our County Manager at the time stated “we don’t have a spending problem, we have a revenue problem”, this is the justification used to raise taxes, it is outrageous.

    As I spoke, I took notice of the blank faces on stage and their unwillingness to do their job. Something has to be done; sitting on the sidelines “hoping” things would go in the right direction isn’t going to cut it.

    I am Donald Dixon, and I am running for a Republican seat as Beaufort County Commissioner. I can assure the public that I will use the position to be a conservative voice in the county business and not be party to ANY special interests.

   Commissioners now are faced with Wind Farms and Rock Quarry issues. Much like the OLF, these outcomes will depend on united citizens to voice their concerns to the commissioners. In years past, we watched as our local hospital was sold and control given to a company outside of our county. I hope that was for the best, only time will tell, but poor oversight was the reason the hospital went broke. We cannot afford to leave our county, with its resources of land, river, and people, in the hands of commissioners not willing to work for the citizens of Beaufort County.

    In the coming year, Beaufort County will have difficult tasks to ponder. The new jail is going to happen soon, there are questions in regards to how much money are we are going to spend (or waste). I am opposed to a “complex” housing an office, jail, and fitness center. I am also opposed to certain areas in the county used to build such a structure. Regardless to how and where the jail is built, your taxes will go up. I believe I can cut the budget back, build a reasonable jail, and control the endless pick-pockets that are spending your tax dollars.
