BCCC Briefs Kids in the Kitchen Series This Summer | Eastern North Carolina Now

    WASHINGTON, N.C.     As part of Beaufort County Community College's Summer Enrichment for Kids & Teens, the Kids in the Kitchen series will give aspiring chefs an opportunity to learn safe kitchen skills while creating delicious and healthy food. Geared toward rising 6th through rising 9th grade, classes will focus on techniques and recipes that can be made at home to the delight of the whole family. Participants will help prepare all the food in the college's Frances Morgan Roberson Culinary Lab, and most evenings classes will set the table and dine together on a fine meal. All supplies are included, and students will enjoy exploring new foods and flavors. Scholarships are available for qualifying participants. All classes cost $35 unless otherwise noted.     Shrimp and Grits (rising 6th through rising 9th grade)

    Here's a chance to learn to make a quick and easy recipe of everyone's favorite traditional Southern fare. Participants will make and dine on shrimp and grits, a big summer salad, and quick key lime pie. It takes place 5:30 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. on June 18.

    Eat Your Veggies! (rising 6th through rising 9th grade)

    This class will use fresh produce from the Farmers Market to make vegetable dishes. Some will be vegetarian, others will include some meat, and all will be delicious. Macerated summer fruit over ice cream makes a cooling dessert. It takes place 5:30 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. on June 25.

    Homemade Ricotta and Pasta (rising 6th through rising 9th grade)

    It is fun to make your own cheese. In this session participants will use whole milk to produce big batches of ricotta cheese and then make a creamy pasta and veggie dish for supper. This class takes place at 5:30 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. on July 9.

    Baking Yeast Bread (rising 6th through rising 9th grade)

    Participants will learn how bake bread with Rachel K., whose eponymous bakery is a local favorite. Each student will be proud to carry home the loaf of bread they baked. The class will use the same dough to make pans of cinnamon rolls. Big glasses of cold milk will accompany the treats take from the oven.

    Breakfast for Supper (rising 6th through rising 9th grade)

    Everyone loves breakfast for supper! Participants will learn to make good omelets, Dutch baked pancakes (sweet or savory), and French toast all in one session. Big bowls of fresh cut-up fruit will round out our meal.

    Grilled Cheese and Tomato Soup (rising 6th through rising 9th grade)

    Grilled cheese sandwiches and homemade tomato soup make a perfect supper on cool evenings. This class will learn to make quick tomato soup garnished with parmesan popcorn and make at least five different kinds of grilled cheese sandwiches. It is amazing how much fun you can have making grilled cheese! No-bake icebox cookies are the dessert recipe. This class will take place 5:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. on July 30.

    Cupcakes and Cookies (ages 10 and up)

    Participants can learn baking and decorating skills to enjoy at home. In the first class, students will bake lots of cookies and cupcakes from scratch. On the second and third days, they will decorate them using colorful icing. Each student will have piping tips and bags, and a coupler to take home and continue using their new skills. Everyone will enjoy tasty and beautiful baked goods too. This class will take place 9:30 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. from July 15 - July 17 and costs $45.
