Northside High School News, Part II | Eastern North Carolina Now

For Immediate Release:

These latest two announcements from the Northside High School, via the Beaufort County School System, reminds us that schools are a focal point of activity.

Northside Panthers recognized one of their prior coaches. Coach Doug Barnes

Recently, Northside Panthers recognized one of their prior coaches. Coach Doug Barnes received a warm round of applause during a home basketball game.

After coaching from 1970 until 1989 at John A. Wilkinson High School, Barnes brought years of experience to the classroom and the Panther gym of Northside High School.

Coach Barnes brought with him 375 wins as the girls and boys basketball coach. Over the next ten years Barnes led the Lady Panthers to over 150 wins. He placed on the scoreboard for the Panthers three state titles for the boys and girls teams.

He raised the bar for the other coaches to follow with nine Regional Appearances at John A. Wilkinson and claimed a state runner up team during his time with the Panthers.

Coach Barnes has accumulated over 500 wins in the state of North Carolina. At one point Barnes held the all time record for wins in high school basketball in the state.

Coach Barnes’ love for the game was only equal to his devotion to the development of the athlete. Barnes’ paw prints at Northside resembles one of a caring and devoted coach that is worthy of others duplicating.

Former Panthers Make Return Visit

Northside Air Force JROTC cadets recently had the opportunity to hear from two prior Panther graduates and one Naval Academy graduate. Cadet Grant Fath a junior at the United States Military Academy in West Point, New York and Cadet Brooke Leigh a senior at East Carolina University visited Northside JROTC cadets in order to speak on the life of a college student/cadet.

Cadet Grant Fath graduated from Northside in 2009. Fath was the Senior Class Vice-President, attended Tar Heel Boy’s State and was the Co-Captain of the varsity football team and played baseball throughout high school. He also received the rank of Eagle Scout along with the Eagle Bronze Palm Award. Fath was appointed by Congressman Walter B. Jones Jr. and was accepted to further his studies at West Point.

Cadet Brooke Leigh graduated from Northside in 2008. Leigh was the class valedictorian, Captain of the cross country team and was on the track team. Leigh was active in the JROTC program and served as the NC-948 Squadron Commander. Cadet Leigh held the position of East Carolina Wing Commander last year.    Northside cadets learned about scholarships opportunities, military training, commissioning programs, field training, summer leadership schools and military careers within the Army, Marines and Air Force. They were told the importance of taking advantage of leadership roles while at high school. Prepare for the SAT and ACT test and take it more than once if necessary.
