Governor Roy Cooper has ordered all United States and North Carolina flags at state buildings, facilities and grounds to be lowered to half-staff immediately through sunset on Friday, October 18, in honor of US Representative Elijah E. Cummings.

    Governor Roy Cooper has ordered all United States and North Carolina flags at state buildings, facilities and grounds to be lowered to half-staff immediately through sunset on Friday, October 18, in honor of US Representative Elijah E. Cummings. A veteran civil rights activist and congressman of Maryland's 7th District, Rep. Cummings passed away on Thursday, October 17.

    A native of Baltimore, MD, Rep. Cummings served as Chairman of the Congressional Black Caucus and was the first African American in history to be named Speaker Pro Tempore of Maryland.

    In his honor, Governor Roy Cooper released the following statement.

    "Elijah Cummings lived a life that valued truth and honor. His revered voice will be sorely missed."

    As a sign of respect, individuals, businesses, schools, municipalities, counties and other government subdivisions are welcome to fly the flag at half-staff for the same duration of time.

    Please note, all North Carolina flag announcements are issued in accordance to regulations outlined in the US Flag Code.
