Northeast Elementary

Anyone who knows Kaylyn Coltrain can easily understand why she was Fifth Grade Teacher Joyce Cutler's choice for the character trait of cleanliness for Northeast Elementary School! Kaylyn was also recognized as the county winner for all of Beaufort County Schools. She is always neatly dressed and well groomed, obeying the school dress code at all times. She looks the picture of tidiness and cleanliness from the top of her head right down to the tip of her toes. Not a hair is out of place! As well as being attractive in appearance, Kaylyn smells good---just plain clean like freshly laundered clothes. Add Kaylyn's wide smile and bright eyes, and you have a student that illustrates cleanliness in all physical ways possible. It is evident that care is taken each day as Kaylyn prepares herself for school. She is a pleasure to greet as she enters the classroom ready for a day of learning at NES.

As Kaylyn readies herself for class, she continues to keep the trait of cleanliness in her focus. Her desk is left organized when she leaves the room, her AR log is a joy to sign, her homework assignments are legibly written in her planner, and all written work is neat. Kaylyn's handwriting is so easy to read as she takes the time to do it well. She also has a keen sense of visual spacing and produces high quality thinking maps that highlight her ability to be neat when thinking creatively. At the end of the day when Kaylyn returns to homeroom, she makes sure that her textbooks and other supplies are stored correctly under her desk. You will not find papers sticking out of the books or binders half hanging out of the desk. Kaylyn also takes a moment to pick up the floor around her desk, without being asked to do so. Not many students make this much effort to keep their personal classroom space clean and neat.

Kaylyn also has a concern for the cleanliness of Northeast Elementary School. Recently, she and several of her friends spent their recess time picking up trash on the playground. No teacher prompted this task. Kaylyn simply got a trash can from the classroom, recruited some help, and then proceeded to spend the next twenty minutes or so beautifying the school grounds. When Kaylyn returned to school the next day she had a miniproject that she asked to share with her 5th grade homeroom. Evidently, she and her sister had decided that the students at NES might like to know why it was so important to keep our environment clean, so they made a poster outlining the values of a clean, safe habitat for animals and people. Kaylyn also wrote a two page report that touched the hearts of the listeners as she pleaded with them to keep our water, air, and land free from pollution. She also decorated a large white trash bag to motivate students to stow trash in the right place. Kaylyn was very vocal about her campaign to clean up the environment and presented her miniproject to two classes. Her work was also displayed in the hallway for many others to acknowledge.

The miniproject is a physical example of the character trait of cleanliness, but just as important is Kaylyn's cleanliness of her heart and her mind. Kaylyn does not speak unkindly to anyone, she does not gossip, she does not bully or tease classmates. According to Mrs. Cutler, Kaylyn is a perfect example of a student that has a clean, innocent, mind and a loving, compassionate heart. Kaylyn is the student that others need to model after for the character trait of cleanliness in body, heart, and mind.

Northeast Elementary School is extremely honored to have Kaylyn Coltrain, fifth grader, as our March nomination for cleanliness. We are even more honored that she represents all of Beaufort County Schools as well. She is a shining example for all to follow.
Kaylyn Coltrain (above) is the daughter of Greg and Tiffany Coltrain and Robin and Shawn Burk of Belhaven.

Northside High School

Yeatsville     Northside Air Force JROTC cadets recently had the opportunity to fly on an HC-130J Search and Rescue plane out of Coast Guard Air Station Elizabeth City, NC. Twenty-seven cadets climbed aboard the aircraft as many experienced their first flight ever.

Cadets were provided safety briefings and given instructions on the aircraft mission, and flight plan. Aircrew members explained their jobs and the impact they play in today's homeland security. Question and answer section allowed the cadets to discover if they might one day choose a life in the United States Coast Guard.

The flight took the students across the birthplace of aviation, Kill Devil Hills and down the coastline to view Cape Hatteras lighthouse. Next the flight changed directions and headed up the Sound towards Belhaven, North Carolina. Cadets from the city had front row seats as they crossed over their homes and saw their fair town from a bird's eye view. Before returning to Coast Guard Elizabeth City the command pilot aboard the HC-130J flew the aircraft in the direction of Yeatesville, allowing the students to view their school from the air.

Student's highlight of the day came when the pilot allowed rotation inside the cockpit of the aircraft. Placing headsets on provided them to communicate with the aircrew members. Northside AFJROTC Instructor, Colonel Mark Remick (prior C-130 aircraft commander) knew the satisfaction that each cadet felt as students sat with open eyes and smiles of satisfaction coming across each cadet's face

Air Station Elizabeth City was established at the dawn of World War II. Chosen for its proximity to Norfolk Naval Base, the treacherous waters off Cape Hatteras, and its access to the northern most ice free river on the east coast, CGAS Elizabeth City began with ten aircraft: three Hall PH-2 seaplanes, three Grumman J2F amphibians, and four Fairchild J2K land based planes. Initial operations involved anti-submarines warfare and search and rescue (SAR). This proud tradition has been carried on to the present. Current Mission includes: Search and Rescue, Homeland Security/Defense, International Ice Patrol, Environmental Protection and Aids to Navigation.

Northside AFJROTC cadets salute the men and women of Coast Guard Air Station Elizabeth City for their dedication to duty and providing them daily homeland security. Our hats go off to each military member that serves our Nation at home and overseas
