Press Release:

Greenville, N.C.     On Thursday, May 7, 2020, President Donald Trump signed an executive order to secure America's seafood supply chain. The United States imports approximately 85 percent of seafood consumed domestically. The executive order places an emphasis on the following:

  • Directives to federal fishery managers to streamline rule-making currently in the pipeline to achieve deregulatory objectives.
  • Addressing technical barriers to seafood exports.
  • Expanding and facilitating U.S. authority to better combat illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing and prevent illegal seafood imports that compete unfairly with American fisheries.
  • Measures to facilitate increased U.S. aquaculture production.

Congressman Greg Murphy, M.D. (NC-03) issued the following statement.

"I am pleased President Trump signed this Executive Order, which will help fishermen in eastern North Carolina," said Murphy. "These are critical steps that will strengthen our seafood supply chain, increase competitiveness and level the playing field with other countries. Commercial fishing is a vital industry for coastal North Carolina, and I am glad our fishermen will be able to get back to work and increase domestic seafood production.

"While I still believe more can be done to help the fishing industry in eastern North Carolina by using scientific data to expand more U.S. waters for commercial harvesting, this is certainly a great step in the right direction. I look forward to working with the president and Congressional leadership to continue crafting policies that will benefit fishermen in eastern North Carolina."
