NCACC Legislative Alert — Contact House Members Today To Support Amendment to HB 729

Press Release:

NCACC encourages you to contact your House Members(s) today to ask them to support an amendment to House Bill 729 Charter School Omnibus to eliminate a provision that would give counties authority to provide capital appropriations to charter schools. NCACC opposes this provision contained in section 2 of the bill for the following key reasons:

  • County resources for public schools are already limited. There is a documented $8.1 billion in unmet K-12 public school needs. Applying further pressure to provide capital funds to charter schools will spread strained resources even more thin.
  • Tax payers currently retain ownership of tax funded capital projects. Most of the time it is the county that retains ownership of the tax funded capital projects, and in the case of traditional public schools it is the local school district, elected by the public, that retains legal ownership. This does not seem to be the case with charter schools, and there are many.

HB 729 passed the House Education K-12 Committee yesterday and NCACC expects the bill to be before the full House for a vote this afternoon.

Please call your House Member(s) now and urge them to support an amendment removing the authority for counties to provide direct capital appropriations to charter schools (Section 2) from the bill.

Feel free to contact NCACC Legislative Counsel Adam Pridemore with questions.

I am a member of NCACC (North Carolina Association of County Commissioners). The NCACC is functionally many things, the greatest of which is that they lobby the NC General Assembly to do what is best for counties, which is odd because what they feel is best for counties is not always best for the people of these counties. I often find that I am intellectually in conflict with their directives.

With the Education Industry far from always doing what is best in educating our young Americans, county commissioners need to be less willing in support of any initiative that grants less control to parents, and more to what leads to less choice in doing what is best to stimulate the intellects of our newest countrymen.
