Press Release:

(Raleigh, N.C.)     Today, Central Piedmont Community College (Central Piedmont) will be the latest recipient of unclaimed cash when State Treasurer Dale R. Folwell, CPA, presents a check for $2,243.82 to representatives of the college. Central Piedmont was established in 1963 and has been an innovative leader among two-year institutions since that time. Growing from only 1,600 students to approximately 56,000 today, the college's six campuses and two centers offer nearly 300 degree, diploma and certificate programs plus an array of non-credit offerings. The college is one of 58 community colleges in the N.C. Community College System.

Media attending Monday's event will have an opportunity to ask Treasurer Folwell about the Department of State Treasurer's (DST) Unclaimed Property Division (UPD), commonly called NCCash.com. It is the repository for approximately 18 million properties valued at roughly $919 million under DST's custody awaiting return to the rightful owners. The treasurer also will field questions on other issues of interest during the event, which is open to the public.

Dr. Kandi Deitemeyer, president of Central Piedmont, and Jeff Lowrance, vice president, communications, marketing and public relations for Central Piedmont, will join Treasurer Folwell at the event.

During a review of data in the system UPD staff identified more than $2,000 belonging to Central Piedmont. The money came from 14 different sources that turned the funds over to UPD. Now, Treasurer Folwell will return the money to its rightful owner.

For the fiscal year through Dec. 31, UPD has paid 86,106 claims totaling about $50.1 million from NCCash. Part of that total has been disbursed through the new NCCash Match program, a no-hassle, expedited system that eliminated paperwork processing. As of Dec. 31, DST paid 54,960 claims totaling nearly $19.1 million.

Under state law, UPD receives and safeguards funds that are escheated, or turned over, to DST. The unclaimed property consists of bank accounts, wages, utility deposits, insurance policy proceeds, stocks, bonds and contents of safe deposit boxes that have been abandoned. More information, including how to find out if you are owed money, can be found at https://www.nccash.com/.
