Mrs. Elizabeth “Libby” Mercer Brousard | Eastern North Carolina Now

   Mrs. Elizabeth “Libby” Mercer Brousard, age 88, a resident of 1289 Macs Lane, Greenville, NC died Wednesday December 26, 2012 at the Golden Living Center in Greenville, NC.

   A funeral service will be held 3:00 PM Sunday December 30, 2012 at the South Creek Missionary Baptist Church in Aurora. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Stephen Lee Jones, Sidney Brooks Spain, James Michael Johnson, Ian Avery Garris, Gregory Brooks Spain and Eric Conrad Garris will serve as pallbearers.

   Libby was born in Beaufort County on December 6, 1924, daughter of the late Jim David Mercer and Neta Elizabeth Tyson Mercer. She was a housewife and mother. On occasions, she worked outside the home at various jobs. She was married to James W. Oakley and they reared two children. Mr. Oakley preceded her in death. She next married Russell L. Hopkins. After the death of Mr. Hopkins, she later married Donald V. Brousard, Sr. who also preceded her in death. In 2008, she left the South Creek /Aurora area and moved to Pitt County to reside with her son and his wife. Lately, she resided at the Golden Living facility.

   Libby is survived by her son: James Douglas Oakley and wife, Chris of Greenville, NC; her daughter: Paulette Oakley Alligood and husband Dwight of Blounts Creek; her grandchildren: Joseph Lee Jones, Jr., Renee Oakley Spain, Trudy Oakley Garris, Christy Oakley Philbee and Pamela Clark Kuers; her great-grandchildren: Stephen L. Jones, Anna Louise Spain, Sidney Brooks Spain, James Michael Johnson, Ian Avery Garris, Mary Elizabeth Spain, Rosanna Lee Garris, Jacob Lee Philbee, Lindsey Elaine Philbee, Marissa Kuers, Haliegh Kuers and Sebastian Lee Jones. Her sister: Ada Mercer Dixon of Chocowinity. In addition to her husbands and parents, she is preceded in death by her son Calvin Lee Oakley who died at two months and her brothers: Wiley Mercer and George A. Mercer.

   The family will receive friends from 2:00 PM until the funeral hour on Sunday at South Creek Missionary Baptist Church.
