Has the time come for a revolt against both the Democrat and Republican parties? | Eastern North Carolina Now

Publisher's Note: This article originally appeared in the Beaufort Observer.

This is what compromise will get you.

There has been a scalding debate going on within the Republican Party in Beaufort County between conservatives and the ...whatever you want to call them: RINO's, moderates, centrists, consensus builders etc. Larry Britt has lately been the Don Quixote of the "moderates" in trying to defend the epitome of the brand, Al Klemm. Britt has had little success, having to resort almost entirely to trying to blame everything on Hood Richardson as if Hood was as George Bush is to the progressives. (Progressive is what Democrats like to be called rather than being more accurately labeled "liberals.") But no matter how hard Klemm and Britt try, they always come up short in offering anything other than a "me too" to the Democrats' agenda.

And we predict we will see the same thing coming out of the McCrory administration. Here we have a situation wherein the voters have given the Republicans substantial majorities in both houses of the Legislature, the Governor's mansion and presumably a majority, albeit a slim one, on the state's Supreme Court. McCrory won a resounding victory, not because he put forth a bold plan to move the state away from the cronyistic corruption of the Basnight/Black/Easley/Perdue cronies but simply because the bulk of the swing voters wanted major change in the "business as usual" operation of state government. Ask any "low information" McCrory voter what McCrory's vision is for the state and we'll bet they can't assemble a dozen words of substance to forecast what he will do over the next four years. McCrory ran a Thomas Dewey campaign (which will be explained in the article linked below.) He was timid in his support of educators' right to be able to defend themselves and protect their students at school, and he has displayed less that principled leadership on whether the state should participate in ObamaCare. And it remains to be seen whether not having to worry about Aunt B's veto stamp will generate more leadership in the General Assembly.

And the state Republican party leadership seriously fumbled the ball in the way it interfered in the local GOP primaries nor did it do much to show respect for the grassroots at the convention in Tampa.

As this is being written the headlines are about a "fiscal cliff deal" negotiated in Washington that raises taxes on the rich but little else. What it does not do is infinitely more important. It does not address the deficit problem that is crushing our economy and presents the greatest threat to the republic since the British marched on Lexington. And 89 senators voted for it.

Think about that. Eighty-nine of 100 agreed. You don't get much more consensus than that.

But there is not a legitimate economist alive today who will argue that raising taxes on the rich will solve the deficit problem. Most will tell you it will make it worse simply because it takes money from producers and gives it to moochers. The only way the deficit will be reduced, much less the debt, will be for the economy to come back to life. But what do these 89 consensus makers do? They take the action that will have the most detrimental impact possible on increasing the productivity of the economy. They vote to hurt those who would be the source of the new investment that will be needed to make the economy boom--just the opposite of what we need to do. And "hurt" is exacting what Barack Obama's objective is here. He wants to punish the achievers rather than encourage them to invest in productive ventures that would grow the economy. Does anyone still have any doubt that what Obama really is doing is destroying the American capitalistic system?

The problem therefore is clear. The problem is that one party is determined to grow the size and control of government and the other...well they don't know what they want to do, except not be criticized as being the party of "No." Never mind when you are up to your eyeballs in debt and your spouse continues to put more spending on the already maxed out credit cards the only salvation that is possible is to say "no."

These "consensus builders" want to find "common ground" to allow the spend-thrift spouse to get an increase in the credit limit of the dozens of cards that are already maxed out rather than simply saying no to adding more charges. It is insane. But that is exactly what we've got at all levels of government in this nation.

And the reason we are in this insane position is simply because we don't have a party that is willing to offer what it will take to save our children's future. We have seen in both the Senate and House this week a bunch of willy-nilly wusses in the Republican party's leadership who are more concerned about what the Elite Media will say about them than they are about putting our government on a sound financial footing.

Dr. Thomas Sowell, arguably the greatest political thinker of our generation, we think, has nailed it. Click here to read his description of the Republican Party.

It is clear to us that the only thing that will save this nation is a serious revolt against Big Government. And we think the best hope for that rests with the TEA Party.

There is not a legitimate economist alive today who will argue that eliminating valuable social programs will solve the deficit problem. And most economists will definitely not tell you that raising taxes on the wealthy will make it worse because it takes money from producers and gives it to moochers. You need to develop a better understanding of demographics where social spending is concerned. The overwhelming majority of those who receive government assistance are not "moochers." Period. That's a myth that's been debunked by countless legitimate sources. Guys like Papa John, who pay their part-time workers minimum wage with no benefits while relying on the government to provide assistance to their exploited workforce, are not producers. He amassed a $400 million fortune while doing this. People like that are pathetic moochers.
