Edna Adeline Chessher Gavin | Eastern NC Now

    Mrs. Edna Adeline Chessher Gavin, age 97, a former resident of Blounts Creek and currently of Washington, passed away Tuesday, August 1, 2023, at her home.

    The family will receive friends from 6:00 PM to 7:30 PM Thursday, August 3, 2023, at Paul Funeral Home & Crematory in Washington and other times at the home of her son, Richard Gavin, 2005 Herring Run Road, Blounts Creek.

    Graveside services will be held 10:00 am Friday, August 4, 2023, at Oakdale Cemetery in Washington, conducted by Marty Alligood.

    Mrs. Gavin was born in Escambia County, Alabama on January 30, 1926. She was the daughter of the late Jesse Albert Chessher and Ester Barrow Chessher. Mrs. Gavin was an inspector for R. J. Reynolds Tobacco Company for 19 years. Later, she worked in the cafeteria at S.W. Snowden School in Aurora and Ammons Bake Shop. Before she retired, Mrs. Gavin did upholstery work out of her home. Mrs. Gavin was a member of Pinetown Church of Christ. In her spare time, she enjoyed sewing and quilting.

    On December 31, 1945, she married Lefate Durell Gavin, who preceded her in death, October 10, 2010.

    Mrs. Gavin is survived by her son, Richard Durell Gavin, and wife Ina of Blounts Creek; daughter, Earlene G. Sapp, and husband Joe of Winston-Salem; seven grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren and one great great grandchild.

    In addition to her parents and her husband, Mrs. Gavin was preceded in death by three brothers, Malone, Calvin, and Jesse Chessher and four sisters, Viola Cook, Lucille Steel, Jane Hawes, and Dorothy Hege.
