Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) spoke to the media Tuesday evening after a historic U.S. House vote led to his removal as Speaker of the House - the first time in U.S. history a speaker has been removed.

The vote to remove McCarthy was led by Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL), who was successful after several other Republicans and the entire Democrat Conference joined his motion to vacate the speakership.

McCarthy spoke about his humble beginnings and championed the American Dream as he spoke about how he went from being rejected from internships he applied for with U.S. congressmen to becoming the 55th Speaker of the House, which he called "one of the greatest honors" of his life.

"The one thing I will tell you is, doing the right thing isn't always easy, but it is necessary," he said. "I don't regret standing up for choosing governing over grievance. It is my responsibility. It is my job. I do not regret negotiating. Our government is designed to find compromise. I don't regret my efforts to build coalitions and find solutions. I was raised to solve problems, not create them."

McCarthy shocked many by saying that he would not run for speaker again and that he wants the Republican Conference to pick someone else.

He said that he would not change a thing about how he handled the events of the last week as they relate to the spending bill that Republicans were forced to pass to keep the government open after Gaetz and several other Republicans blocked a conservative spending bill.
