Missing Money Had Been Placed with NCCash.com Program as Undeliverable

    (Raleigh, N.C.)     Industries of the Blind in Greensboro makes, packages, assembles and distributes products for entities as diverse as the U.S. Army, Walmart and Staples. On Monday, Dec. 4, they will add check opening to their functions when State Treasurer Dale R. Folwell, CPA, returns money that was diverted into the Unclaimed Property Division (UPD) of the Department of State Treasurer (DST).

    Money that has become undeliverable for a variety of reasons is safeguarded at UPD until the rightful owners claim it. During a review of data in UPD, commonly called NCCash.com, DST staff identified $1,325.15 belonging to the production facility.

    After the check presentation to Industries of the Blind officials, media attending the event will have the opportunity to question Treasurer Folwell about NCCash.com or other DST matters. Industries of the Blind President and CEO Joshua Gould will be available to talk about the organization, which provides employment and personal development opportunities to people who are blind or visually impaired so that they may achieve greater independence.

    Under state law, NCCash.com is currently safeguarding nearly $1.09 billion in funds that are escheated, or turned over, to DST. The money is awaiting return to the rightful owners after being lost, misdirected or overlooked. It represents 17.7 million properties statewide, and more than 19 million owners are associated with those properties.

    The unclaimed property consists of bank accounts, wages, utility deposits, insurance policy proceeds, stocks, bonds and contents of safe deposit boxes that have been abandoned.
