John Lee Thiel | Eastern North Carolina Now

John Lee Thiel, 78, of Washington, NC, and a distinguished U.S. Air Force veteran, passed away on Sunday, February 11, 2024. In accordance with his wishes, there will be no formal service.

Born on August 3, 1945, in Camden, NJ, John spent the majority of his life in New Jersey before relocating to Washington, NC, where he lived for the past 20 years.

He was predeceased by his parents, Irene and Llewellyn Thiel, and his brother, David Thiel. He leaves behind a loving family, including his sister-in-law, Joan Thiel of Metuchen, NJ; his niece, Becky Manatch, and her family of Fairfield, CT; and his niece, Lindsay Richardson, and her family of Aberdeen, NC.

John's uniqueness was evident in every aspect of his life. His ability to captivate with stories from his experiences reflected his special nature. His service in the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam War highlighted his commitment to his country and his talent as a mechanic, extending into his civilian life with his work on cars and his contributions at Revlon.

An avid collector, John's enthusiasm for cars was unparalleled. He relished in sharing tales of his various vehicles, including an old Mustang convertible, a classic Corvette, and his VW Bug. John was a firm believer in the value of traditional communication, preferring handwritten letters and phone calls over digital correspondence.

John's love for adventure was manifested in his annual trips to Club Med Turks and Caicos during his younger years, where his vibrant personality shone brightly. His openness and willingness to converse with new acquaintances made him unforgettable to many.

Adding to his memorable companions was his loyal beagle, Sam, who was not just a pet but a true buddy. Sam's constant presence and companionship were a source of joy and comfort to John.

John's legacy will live on through the many lives he touched. He will be dearly missed and forever hold a special place in the hearts of his family and friends.
