House Republicans impeached controversial Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas on Tuesday for his role in facilitating what many critics and experts have called an "invasion" on the U.S. southern border by millions of illegal aliens from around the world.

Members voted 214-213 to approve a resolution that made Mayorkas the first Cabinet secretary to be impeached since 1876.

In response to his impeachment, leftist DHS spokesperson Mia Ehrenberg released a statement that made political attacks against House Republicans.

"House Republicans will be remembered by history for trampling on the Constitution for political gain rather than working to solve the serious challenges at our border," the statement claimed. "While Secretary Mayorkas was helping a group of Republican and Democratic Senators develop bipartisan solutions to strengthen border security and get needed resources for enforcement, House Republicans have wasted months with this baseless, unconstitutional impeachment."

Despite not enforcing existing federal immigration law and allowing millions of illegal aliens into the U.S., Ehrenberg claimed that House Republicans did not have a "shred of evidence or legitimate Constitutional grounds" to impeach Mayorkas.

"House Republicans have falsely smeared a dedicated public servant who has spent more than 20 years enforcing our laws and serving our country," she claimed.

An investigation into Mayorkas began last year as the country has grappled with an explosion in illegal aliens flooding into the U.S. and Mexican drug cartels fueling deaths across the U.S. with fentanyl.

Democrats panned the impeachment proceedings as a "political stunt" and the White House went as far as to claim the endeavor is "unconstitutional." Mayorkas pushed back against what he called "false accusations" levied against him.

House Homeland Security Committee Chairman Mark Green (R-TN), who led the investigation into Mayorkas, argued in floor remarks on Tuesday that lawmakers "exhausted all other options," making impeachment the only recourse left available to lawmakers. "Our oath to the Constitution now requires us to exercise this solemn duty," he added.

Numerous polls show that the American public overwhelmingly disapproves of Biden's handling of immigration and border issues and blames him for the crisis that his administration caused with its policies, which included reversing former President Donald Trump's border policies during his first weeks in office.
