Weather Alert: A Really Bad Beach Week | Eastern North Carolina Now

News release:

    Good Morning:

The Good News in the Weather: There is a 70% chance that it won't rainout our Fourth of July holiday and Fireworks demonstrations.

The immediate news is not so good. A Flood Watch basically indicates conditions are at a point that flooding could begin with the next heavy shower that comes into Beaufort County. Parts of Beaufort County have seen rainfall six straight days and will likely see more rainfall over the next two to three days. It will not take much rainfall in many areas to cause ditch lines and low areas to become inundated with water and floating debris.

The forecast has not changed much since the last weather update I sent you last Friday. If you come upon a flooded road remember the best alternative course of action: "Turn around don't Drown". First responders should take great care when entering the flood waters as floating debris (wood, wood with nails, broken glass or propane cylinders) could be just under the water. Mother nature's other inhabitants of Beaufort County namely animal, reptile and insect populations that live along the streams may be washed down stream in the flood waters and will latch on to the first thing they come too. Take care in and around flood waters and please discourage young people from playing in the waters as they may contain untreated sewage from human beings, the animal kingdom or even hazardous waste from businesses upstream.

Fire Departments and Rescue Squads it is with sadness that I must report: Nineteen members of the Prescott Fire Department in Arizona lost their lives late yesterday fighting a wild fire not far from Prescott. They were part of the elite twenty person Granite Mountain Hotshot Fire Crew working the fire when their position was overrun by the fire following a sudden shift in the wind. The Governor of the State of Arizona has ordered their flags to half-staff in honor of these fallen heroes. Please say a prayer for these fallen heroes and their families when the time is appropriate for you to do so. The fire remains zero percent contained this morning.

Be safe and take care when you must be traveling in and around our county.
