Governor McCrory Announces Appointments | Eastern North Carolina Now

For Immediate Release:

    Raleigh     The Office of Governor Pat McCrory announced the following appointments today:

    Acupuncture Licensing Board

    •   Dr. Mary Majebe (Buncombe County) - Majebe is the founder and director of Chinese Acupuncture and Herbology Clinic in Asheville. The clinic has been in operation since 1985. Majebe is also the president of the Daoist Traditions College of Chinese Medical Arts in Asheville. She will be filling the role of a licensed acupuncturist.

    The board has the responsibility to deny, issue, suspend or revoke acupuncture licenses, establish requirements for acupuncture schools, and authorize continuing education programs for licensure. Each term length is three years.

    North Carolina Psychology Board

    •   Anthony Powell (Pender County) - Powell is the mental health director at Pender Correctional Institution. Additionally, he is an adjunct faculty member at Campbell University where he teaches criminal justice and psychology courses. He is being reappointed to his second term and filling the role of a psychological associate.

    •   Matthew Van Horn (Wake County) - Van Horn is an attorney with his own law practice in Raleigh. His practice covers a diverse range of topics including medical related cases such as personal injury and malpractice.

    The board licenses qualified persons to practice psychology and take disciplinary action when licensees are found to be practicing in violation of law and ethics. The board also ensures that non-licensed individuals do not practice psychology or represent themselves as psychologists. Each term length is three years.

    Podiatry Examiners

    •   Dr. David Kirlin (Gaston County) - Kirlin is a podiatrist at Gaston Foot and Ankle Associates. He grew up in New Jersey and graduated from Temple School of Medicine. He is being reappointed to his second term in a licensed podiatrist seat.

    The board is responsible for licensing podiatrists in North Carolina. Members are appointed by the governor after receiving a list of nominations from the board of top three candidates as voted on by podiatrists across the state. Each term length is three years.

    North Carolina State Board of Examiners in Optometry

    •   Dr. William Rafferty (Forsyth County) - Rafferty works in the Winston-Salem office for Duke Health in the Ophthalmology division. He graduated from the University of Alabama School of Optometry. He will be serving his first term and filling the role of a licensed optometrist.

    The board is responsible for the licensing of optometrists and the regulation of the optometry profession. Each term length is five years.
