    Mr. Floyd Wilson Sawyer, age 86, a resident of Washington, died Thursday, August 8, 2013 at Vidant Medical Center in Greenville.

    Graveside services will be held 2:00 PM Sunday, August 11, 2013 at Mt. Olive Church of Christ Cemetery, Belhaven, conducted by Rev. Randy Varni. Mr. Sawyer’s grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

    Mr. Sawyer was born in Hyde County on November 10, 1926. He was the son of the late Rueben Edward Sawyer, Sr. and Gladys Carmen Richards Sawyer. Mr. Sawyer attended Sladesville and Beaufort County Schools. He was a retired heavy equipment operator. He was a past member of the Ruritan Club and Mt. Olive Church of Christ. He attended the First Free Will Baptist Church in Washington.

    On August 23, 1946, Mr. Sawyer married the former Meredith Irene Jones, who survives.

    In addition to his wife, Mr. Sawyer is survived by his children, Floyd “Al” Sawyer and wife, Stevie of Pantego, Elaine Simpson and husband, Lenwood of Greenville, Peggy Jordan and husband, Jack of Belhaven, Ruthie DeReadt and husband, Jim of Caseville, Michigan; two brothers, Rueben Edward Sawyer of Washington, William Douglas Sawyer of Belhaven; five sisters, Ruth Hopkins of Washington, Gloria Fortusky of Norfolk, Va., Zella Stassfort of Atlanta, Ga., Mary Lou Pedley of Washington, Rachel Lonberger of Panama City, Fla.; eight grandchildren; and 15 great grandchildren.

    Mr. Sawyer was preceded in death by a brother, Ormand Dempsey Sawyer. The family will receive friends after the service at the graveside.
