Fancy waterfront vs drivable roads in Washington NC | Eastern NC Now

Washington is planning and implementing the revitalization of downtown Washington and even more focus on the waterfront.

ENCNow
Washington is planning and implementing the revitalization of downtown Washington and even more focus on the waterfront. While I do believe that building a new waterfront for Washington is a great idea, there are other projects that need attention before the waterfront should be discussed.

Third Street, Fifth Street, and also Hackney Avenue between Business 17 and West Fifth Street need to be repaired before anything is done to our waterfront. Third and Fifth streets run the entire course through our town and are more than an eyesore to namesake. Third Street is where our “tourist” will travel, if they are on a historical tour, as it is marked NC 32, that will lead them on to Bath NC. Others will take US 264 to get to the same points. These two streets will tell visitors that Washington is nothing more than a tourist trap. These roads scream, I WANT YOUR MONEY AND I WILL GET IT EVEN IF I HAVE TO DESTROY YOUR VEHICLE.

Hackney Avenue is just as bad. This is a major route for folks living along Hackney Avenue and West Main Street, as well as West Third street. All threes roads will beat your vehicles to pieces.

I’m willing to bet money, that nearly every driving citizen in Washington has used all three of these roads, at one time or another, and I willing to bet that nearly every one of those who drive these streets would much rather have the roads repaired than having the waterfront construction started. I will be sending this same letter out to other City, and County officials as I believe fixing our roads should be Priority One for our town.

Dear Mr. Pyle,

Thank you for your input. It is always a pleasure to hear from any concerned citizen about our town. Our organization is made up of volunteers, who like yourself want to see a better Washington in the future.

I can’t speak for the City of Washington but would like to clarify this issue.

I believe most of the roads you mentioned are state roads (except for Hackney). Funds for road improvements would be done by NCDOT. I would suggest you address your concerns with them too.

Best regards,
